DVD Review: Transformers Rescue Bots: Roll to the Rescue

When I heard about Transformers Rescue Bots I was very excited because now there would be a program I could watch with my 4 year old daughter where she could be introduced to the Transformers. I saw the toys in the store and I picked up a bunch of them to give to her. I gave her Optimus Prime for her first day of school last year. She just recently took him to school for Show and Tell. I was excited because this is a way to share with her something that I have loved most of my life.

When I was asked to review a copy of this DVD Rescue Bots: Roll to the Rescue I said sure because I know how much Eva enjoys watching the show. And also because I enjoy watching the show with her. IT is a good introduction to the Rescue Bots with some fun shows to get you excited about more.

Transformers Rescue Bots is a kids show aimed at younger children. The Rescue Bots in the show are Autobots who were in statis and when they intercept a message from Optimus Prime their ship lands them on Earth. In order to get up to speed on Earth and its inhabitants Optimus Prime charged the four Rescue Bots with the mission of working with a Family of Heroes. The Burns family which consists of Chief Charlie Burns, Kade, Dani, Graham and the youngest Burns, Cody. The Rescue Bots are Heatwave, Chase, Boulder and Blades. Each Rescue Bot is paired with a human partner to work with and learn from.

While the Rescue Bots are in the public eye they must behave as if they are taking orders from their human counterparts. They have to live their lives on Earth as Robots in Disguise. Not every Rescue Bot likes this mission however.

Heatwave is the leader of the group and he is resentful of having to be a “Robot in Disguise” while on this planet. He also very much wants to be part of Optimus Prime’s team and fight Decepticons. Heatwave is also paired with the most egotistical member of the Burns family, Kade. Kade is perfectly content to call the shots even if that means he makes mistakes often. Kade and Heatwave, grudgingly , learn how to work together. Heatwave becomes a fire truck.

Chase is the most pragmatic of the bunch. He is obsessed with rules and protocol and has the least trouble acting like a robot in front of the humans. He is partnered with Chief Burns and turns into a police car.

Boulder is very excited to be on Earth and wants to learn as much as he can about culture, nature and history. Boulder tries to do many human things and often forgets that he is supposed to be pretending to be a mindless machine. Boulder turns into a heavy construction vehicle and yet remains one of the most gentle of the team. Boulder is paired with Graham, the smartest Burns family member.

Blades is a helicopter and he’s afraid of heights. He’s paired with Dani the only daughter of Chief Charlies Burns. Dani is a thrill seeker and must learn to work with Blades’ hangups and shortcomings.

Eva and I have watched every episode of the Rescue Bots show. It has a sort of Eureka vibe to it. Levar Burton place Doc Green, a sort of mad scientist, or rather absent minded scientist, who keeps creating things that don’t quite work as he intends. While there is a disaster or emergency every week a larger storyline began to emerge through the season. There was even a more sinister character, voiced by Tim Curry, named Dr. Morocco who will most likely be back to cause more trouble next season.

In this show the values of teamwork, friendship, loyalty, trust are what are most important. The team learns from each other and as they become a true family of heroes.

The show is also very funny and there some great pop culture references in it as well.

Here is a gallery of the Rescue Bots and then the official press release on the DVD that came out today which has six episodes to give you a taste of Transformers Rescue Bots. There is also a link to downloadable activity sheets.
