I have partnered with Life of Dad and Beautyrest for this campaign, but my opinions are my own.
Sleep is a rare commodity for me. I have a crazy sleep schedule that I would not wish on anyone. Here’s a typical week for me. Strap in for a crazy ride.
Most people start their weeks on Monday morning when they go to work. On Monday mornings I am returning from work. I start my work week on Friday night at 7pm. However, my Friday usually begins at 5:30am when Andrew wakes us up. We have not been able to break him of this habit. So, I am up starting very first thing in the morning and I’m awake until about 9am Saturday morning. That means that each Friday into Saturday I am awake for 28 hours straight.
That Is Just The Beginning.
I work a weekend night shift and so my schedule is work from 7pm Friday night to 7am Saturday morning. I repeat this two more times until I return home Monday morning around 7:45am. On Saturday and Sunday I sleep the day away. I wear ear plugs all year round and I use air conditioner in the Summer to help blocking out the noise so the rest of the family can go about their lives. Also so Vampire Dad gets a tiny bit of rest. After my 36 hour weekend overnight shift I return home Monday morning to start my second job, being a parent. I stay awake until I take my son to school. Then I race back home to sneak in a 2 1/2 hour nap, if I am lucky.
From Monday to Thursday I try and get back to a normal sleep schedule and flip the script over to getting to bed around 10 or 11pm and waking around 6am. For some reason Andrew decides that 5:30 is a better wake up time for Fridays but 6am is fine the rest of the week. I barely ever feel rested. I take naps when I can and try to recover some bits of sleep. Typically, by Wednesday I am human again but that is stretching out over into Thursdays lately. Sadly, that is just in time to do this crazy thing all over again.
Was that exhausting to read? Imagine living that life for the past 6 years.
I am not in a position to actually change to a different job for a little while longer, but I do need to work on changing my sleep habits where I can and that is something I am working on with the help of the Beautyrest® Sleeptracker® monitor. I am going to see if I can improve my sleep. Without sleep I am an irritable mess. That is not a good combination when you have an energetic 5 year-old to chase around all week long.
What is the Beautyrest Sleeptracker?
In a nutshell, the Beautyrest Sleeptracker monitor is a non-invasive, reliable device that monitors your sleep cycle, sleep efficiency and more at an unprecedented level of accuracy, while offering personalized, easy-to-implement coaching tips to help you make the most of your time asleep.
I received my Beautyrest Sleeptracker monitor on the Thursday before Easter and set it up right away. I was going to be heading on family vacation so I needed to monitor as much sleep as I possibly could before that trip. The Beautyrest Sleeptracker monitor has two monitors so that you and your partner can both monitor and analyze your sleep. We do so through the Sleeptracker app. The first night that I used this product I went to bed at 11:15 and fell asleep fairly quickly. However, woke up around 4am and could not go back to sleep for close to an hour. When I did go back to sleep it was for about 2 hours before waking up for the day. I like being able to see my sleep score and uncover how I actually slept on the Sleeptracker app. See the image below of my first night’s sleep with the product.
Can you see that big red block closest to the morning, that was when I was awake. I’d have to say, this is a really accurate product. I know when I was awake and pretty much every time I get up. What I didn’t know was how much deep sleep I get and more. Years ago I had sleep apnea and had to do a sleep study. I was completely wired up to gauge how I was sleeping. Wearing that apparatus was not conducive to any sort of restful sleep. Luckily, the Beautyrest Sleeptracker monitor is not a wearable product. It includes a sensor that is positioned under your head between the mattress and the foundation/frame. You simply turn on the app before bed and go to sleep or you can set up the app to automatically your record sleep. The Sleeptracker does all the rest while you rest. Then, the next morning you get an analysis screen like the one above where you can see if you have achieved your sleep goal.
The Sleeptracker app has a bunch of great features like White Noise with 21 different options from airplane cabin to camp fire and so much more in between. The app even works with Amazon Alexa. The app can send you a reminder that it is time for bed. That can come in handy when we are deciding whether or not to binge another episode of TV. The Dynamic Sleep Coach is also a helpful part of the app. With it you get personal insights into your sleep and suggestions for improving your sleep. I am going to be paying full attention to this in order to improve what little sleep I do get.
