I’ve Been Cleaning Pixie Dust All Day

Photo-A-Day #2012

Yesterday Eva turned 3 years old and as I am trying to steer clear of writing and working on the weekends I posted a simple photo and a short video. The photo was of the table at Fortune House and not of Eva. I felt that the photos taken yesterday were ones that I was going to keep close to the family rather than put them all out online. We had a great couple of days and I would like to write a bit about them today.

On Saturday we went to Tougas Farm as a family to go apple picking and to get a pumpkin for carving soon. It was a good day where we could go and be distracted. Saturday was a sad anniversary for us. It comes a day before one of our happiest days together as a family, the birth of Eva. The sadness is something that we’ve been working through and I think we’ve come out stronger as a family.

So Saturday was a good day overall, picking apples was a lot of fun and then selecting the pumpkin was great. We even got some kettle corn. The weirdest thing that we saw while at the farm was a pig projectile poop. We moved just in time. Eva was looking at the pig and it turned around and I thought that something didn’t look quite right. We moved out of the way and suddenly the pig let it rip. Thank goodness we weren’t oblivious to what was going on because then poor Eva probably would have not had such a good day.

We spent the night at our friend Kate and John’s house. Eva came with us to play with their daughter. Eva ended up staying up till 10:30pm. She wouldn’t sleep in their bed but watched TV instead. I figured she’d drift off to sleep, I was wrong. It was nice to hang out with all the couples that help with Marriage Prep class. We had a nice night.

On Sunday, Eva’s Birthday, she got up and opened a few gifts from us (Barbie sized Rapunzel and Flynn Rider doll (I got them from Mattel for a review that is forthcoming)) and some books from Aunt Jenny. I gave Eva a few minutes to play with them because we had all slept late and I wanted to start a new tradition with Eva, Birthday Breakfast. I co-opted this tradition from my father. He’s been taking my sister out for breakfast for her birthday since she was about 3 years old. I think it is a great thing and so wanted to do this with Eva. We went down to SweetWorks for breakfast and it was delicious. We split a “Big Three” breakfast and I ordered some extra bacon for Eva because she would have eaten all of mine and we can’t have that. I loved having that special time with Eva. We walked down to breakfast int eh crisp morning air. I carried her along on my shoulders as she played bongos on my head. It was an experience as a Dad that I will treasure forever.

We went to church right after our breakfast and Uncle Mike came with us. Eva played with her Rapunzel doll and Uncle Mike all through church (quietly and respectfully of course). We ran home after Mass and took Eva over to our friend Kelly’s house so that Eva could play wither her son and so that Kelly could watch her while Allison and I did the marriage prep course for engage couples. I think it was one of our most successful classes to date. The engaged couples were “engaged” in the conversations and the married couples did great talks. Allison and I are going to do a talk at the next one.

After marriage prep my parents came home from the Cape to go out for dinner with us at Fortune House. We had a delicious meal, as always, and it was nice to see everyone there. Eva had a great time and enjoyed the ice cram, chicken fingers and the cupcakes that Allison had made for her Sunday morning at 6:30am. What a good mom.

Once we put Eva down for bed I got on Skype with Daniel M. Clark to record another episode of Geek Dads Weekly. I think this was a really good episode that you should listen to.

  1. Did you really have to clean up Pixie dust? I am totally going to make Eva some pixie dust and mail it over to her. I think she needs at least a pound of the stuff.

    1. Andy,
Believe me, we have plenty of pixie dust. You’ll have that spread all over the place soon enough my friend.

  2. I have to say that I’m genuinely loving the fact that you are taking more time for the family:) Not that you didn’t do enough before…but it’s just sweet to see you all be able to enjoy each other without all the “electronic influences.” It’s a lot harder than it would seem to be…but I was telling someone the night we had at the pool and then just sitting and talking at the hotel was awesome! It was so relaxing. I need to take a page from the BenSpark book:)

I’m very happy to see you had a wonderful weekend celebrating Eva and the family:) You guys are the bestest!

    1. Mo,

Thanks. I still do sneak away from time to time to get to the computer and do a little here and there. I am working on it and if I changed completely overnight that would freak out Allison too much. 🙂

  3. Daddy-daughter time is so very important. So glad you took Eva to a Birthday breakfast. Good job avoiding the Pig Poop too. LOL

    1. Deborah,
Daddy-Daughter time is so much fun. I love spending time with Eva. Birthday Breakfast is one of those things I will cherish and look forward to all year.
