Apparently those shows that you have been waiting to binge watch on are called your Shelfie. You’ve put them up on a virtual shelf waiting for that day when you can dust them off and consume. I didn’t know what they were called. Now I know. It is a great topic for this month’s Stream Team Alert. The Stream Team Alert is a writing prompt for members of the Netflix Stream Team. It seems like each month the alert is perfectly timed for what is happening in my life. Last month with those fun kids shows and then this month with the Shelfies. The reason that this means something for me is the show Longmire.
Ever since the show Longmire debuted on A&E I wanted to watch it. But, with one thing or another happening I just never started. This month before I got my writing prompt I watched the first five episodes. I’m really enjoying it and am excited to learn that Netflix picked up the show and did a fourth season. The main reason that I wanted to watch the show was for Katee Sackoff. I binged on Battlestar Galactica a year ago and wanted to watch everything that she was a part of. So far the show is interesting, the characters are compelling and their appears to be an overarching mystery around Walt, our main character. I also like the performance given by Lou Diamond Phillips.
Another show that I’ve been meaning to start is Supernatural. This show has been on for many, many seasons and thinking about cracking into this Shelfie is daunting to say the least. The show is a story of two brothers who travel the country investigating the paranormal and fighting demons and monsters. The show is still on the air and I figure that by the time I get current then the latest seasons will be on Netflix for me to watch. Netflix has 9 seasons for you to binge upon. Season 11 starts next month so if you need to catch up with Sam and Dean then get a move on.
The third show that I would like to start watching is The League. This is a comedy about a fantasy football league. I want to watch it primarily for Johnathan Lajoie. I’ve been watching his videos on YouTube for years and they are hilarious. I am interested in seeing what he is like on a show. I’ve heard good things about this show and even though I am not a sports guy I do enjoy comedy.
Those are my Shelfies. What are the shows that you are waiting to dig into when you have the time? I’m going to suggest a few that I really enjoy and am caught up with. These shows are on Netflix and are perfect for adding to your Shelfie.
MARVEL’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.– With the third season about to start tomorrow night it is the perfect time to get into this show and binge through seasons 1 and 2. The show had a slow start to the first season, although I enjoyed it thoroughly, it picked up as Captain America: The Winter Soldier hit theaters. Closely tying the movie and show together was brilliant.
Bones – Allison and I have been watching this show for 10 seasons and are ready for season 11 to start. For anyone who hasn’t seen the show before you can watch all ten of the previous seasons on Netflix. (Season 10 drops on Netflix September 29th) A good show with a nice cast that I have enjoyed for ten years.
Gotham – This would be the easiest show to binge. Gotham has started the second season and season one is available on Netflix. This is the story of Gotham City before Batman was Batman. It follows an idealistic young police detective, Jim Gordon as he takes on a corrupt Gotham City Police Department and a young Bruce Wayne with fresh wounds of his parent’s murder. As the show progresses we see the rise of villains and glimpses of what is to come. This is a dark series both in color and tone. Well worth a watch.
Heroes was an ambitious show when it aired and had a great first season. Where shows like Lost would leave you with little answers to mysterious questions Heroes would answer questions each week and yet suck you in with even more questions. The show faltered a bit in the second and third seasons but is being rebooted – or reborn starting this Fall season. So, if you don’t want to be lost as to what is going on then check out those first four seasons.
Once Upon A Time – Sundays we have been glued to our television to watch this show about fairy tale characters come to life in the real world. The first couple seasons were amazing and I followed them religiously. Now going into the fifth season I am excited to see where the story goes. We’ve seen Peter Pan, The Wizard of Oz and now we’re going to look into Camelot and King Arthur. The Arthurian Legend is my favorite story ever. I can’t wait to see this.
Person of Interest – This show about a supercomputer that was created to monitor everything that happens in the world and detect acts of terror before they happen is surprisingly human. Jim Caviezel, Michael Emerson and Taraji P. Henson are well matched as a team. Three of the four seasons of this show are on Netflix now and season 5 will soon be starting. Start watching today and you’ll enjoy it.
The problem is that there are now too many good tv shows, it truly is the golden age of television. Hannibal, House of Cards, Game of Thrones, True Detective…I pine for the days where I had 2 tv channels and no internet, they were simpler days 🙂
