This weekend the newest Disney Channel family show called Andi Mack premiered. This is a wonderful show that is all about family and friendships. It isn’t over the top funny and the show deals with some big issues but it does so in a great way. This series was created and executive produced by Terri Minsky (creator of “Lizzie McGuire”). The show came out in a one-hour premiere episode. I knew that Eva would enjoy it so I recorded it on the DVR. We watched it together tonight and I was right, she loved it. She wasn’t the only one.
To provide a tool for parents and families, the national non-profit Common Sense Media, who has given the series a rare 5 out of 5 star review, just launched a video viewer’s guide called “Conversations about Andi Mack,” that features a Youth Development Expert, Dr. Yalda T. Uhls of Common Sense Media discussing the themes represented in the series including self-expression, acceptance, communication and optimism. The conversations include tips and suggestions from Dr. Uhls, and insights and personal experiences from families on how to use the storytelling in the series to initiate and navigate through meaningful conversations with your family.
I had seen commercials for the show and I just had a feeling about the big family secret. It is a really interesting twist and then it completely changes the family dynamic. Luckily, this is an emotionally healthy family that loves each other and talked about their feelings and fears and more. Andi also has a great support system of friends. She’s only a few years older than Eva and I think that seeing shows like this one are actually good influences on kids growing up.
I’m excited about this show because Eva just lost Girl Meets World and was looking for a new family show to enjoy. I think ‘Andi Mack’ is it.
