On August 2nd Slugterra: Return of the Elementals will be hitting theaters in a limited release. I received a screener so that I could review the movie and I watched it this past weekend.
In the TV movie Slugterra: Ghoul from Beyond the Shane Gang faced a powerful slug called, The Goon. this was a ghouled Boon Doc slug and it could control minds. When the Shane Gang went up against the Goon it was controlling a slugslinger from the Eastern Caverns named Junjie. The Shane Gang rescued Junjie, defeated the Goon and things settled down for a while.
In Return of the Elementals the Shange Gang is at the hideout and Junjie has joined the team. We learn that Junjie is a master of the art of slug-fu, an art where slugslinger and slugs are so closely linked that the slugslinger can control their slugs through certain movements and exercises. Junjie has been training his whole life and is very rigid. The Shane Gang is a little less so. Suddenly the team has to deal with a crisis. Half of the slugs that they have suddenly turn into ghouls.
The gang learns that all slugs in Slugterra originated from five elemental slugs: Air, Water, Earth, Fire and Energy. Something has happened to the Air Elemental, it has been turned to a ghoul and so all air slugs also turn to ghouls. Eli tries to heal the ghouled slugs with Doc but it doesn’t take. It is up to the team to find out who is behind this and also find and protect the remaining elemental slugs before it is too late.
I enjoyed the movie. I’ve enjoyed everything that has been put out from Slugterra. The movie leaves things open for more and I am hopeful that something more will be made to tie up the story. The show is over and this movie feels a bit like a goodbye and I hope that I am wrong in that. I want to see certain things resolved before this ends for good.
