I am a compensated DIYZ™-sponsored blogger. Opinions are my own and additional products used in the project were selected by me.
It is no secret that I want to sell our house and move. Part of the preparations have been to fix the things around the house that are not in the best state. Our floodlight on the garage has been out for nearly a year, probably longer. It looks awful, too. Especially since bees decided to start a home in the broken sensor. I had been really intimidated to do this job myself because it is an electrical project.
When I was selected to take part in this campaign with the @DIYZ_App I looked through the app and saw that replacing a floodlight was one of the options. The DIYZ App is free to download on both iOS and Android platforms.
At least six months ago I bought a new floodlight and lights in hopes that I would replace the broken one. Hoping something will get done and actually doing it myself are two very different things. When I saw the project on the app I knew that was the one I was going to complete. I simply had to, or else I would never have fixed the light. I like how the DIYZ App has step-by-step instructions as well as segmented videos to help me tackle the project. By reading all the steps and watching the videos ahead of time, I knew what I was in for. I also knew what I would need because there was a list of recommended tools and materials at my fingertips. If I had wanted to, I could have easily purchased those tools and materials via Amazon without leaving the app.
I went off to the store with my phone and the app. I opened to the materials list and started shopping. I picked up all the suggested materials and a few other things for future projects. When I got home I prepared the work space and got ready to begin. I shut off the power to the garage, set up the ladder and went to assess the situation. I had my phone with me open to the project on the app because if I ran into an issue at any time I could speak directly with a professional contractor via video chat, for free for a limited time! There is also the option to disable the video and talk with the Pro over the phone. All of DIYZ’s Pro Advisors are thoroughly vetted professionals, with years of experience in home repair and remodeling. They’ve seen it all in their experience, and can quickly help any DIYer get the job done themselves. They will help users understand the scope of their project, and what tools and materials you will need to get started. They can also answer how-to questions that inevitably come up along the way especially if you get stuck in the middle of your project.
I did not get stuck during my project but, I did have to finish my project on the second day because in my zeal to remove the old floodlight fixture, I ripped down the junction box and destroyed it. That’s okay since it was for a differently shaped floodlight. I had to get back to the store to buy one better shaped to my new floodlight. I even found one that matched the color of it perfectly!
The next day I dropped Andrew at school and raced back home to complete my project. I secured the new junction box and then attached all the wires together, buttoned everything up and it was the moment of truth. I went back into the house and turned the power back on to the garage. Walking back to the garage I wondered to myself, would the lights turn on? I climbed back up the ladder and flipped the switch to test…and the lights turned on! I had a real sense of accomplishment and a huge smile at fixing this myself. There certainly is value in rolling up your own sleeves and tackling a project. It also makes financial sense, too because I don’t have the extra money to hire a professional for this. I was so excited to complete the project that I immediately posted to Facebook that I was done and there was light. My wife commented first reminding me that there were many more projects to complete. Lucky for me, there is a large library of popular DIY and home improvement projects on the DIYZ App.
As I am thinking about all that needs to be done to get the house ready to sell I am sure that I’ll be looking at the various DIYZ App categories such as electrical, exterior, lawn and garden, paint, plumbing, walls and flooring, and windows and doors. Once we do actually move I will be going back to the app to check out the projects for home entertaining like ‘How to Build a Fire Pit’ or even ‘How to Make a Beer Caddie.’ In at least one of those projects I am sure that I will need the help of one of the pro advisors. In addition to the video chat feature, which is free for a limited time, there is also the option to take real-time photos of the project and allow the Pro Advisor to annotate on the images. Users can chat with DIYZ Pro Advisors from 6:00 PM to 1:00 AM ET Monday through Friday. On weekends, DIYZ advisors will be available to help tackle projects from 8:00 AM to 1:00 AM ET.
