Allison and I were invited to stay at the Daniel Webster Inn and Spa and see all the amenities of the Inn. Our stay was compensated. Opinions are our own.
Growing up on Falmouth Cape Cod we often did not venture beyond Mashpee because of how “far away” those other towns were. Going to Sandwich? Well that is clean across the cape and back to the canal. You might as well go home if you are heading there. That is often an opinion anywhere on the Cape. Once you get to your place on Cape Cod you hunker down and avoid the traffic at all costs. However, if you do that then you miss out on all that Cape Cod has to offer. There is a rich history here that is waiting to be discovered. One such historical place is The Daniel Webster Inn.
The Daniel Webster Inn is so named because the famous Boston lawyer, Daniel Webster had a room reserved at this Tavern from 1815 to 1851. There has been lodging on this site for over 300 years. Nestled in the very heart of the town of Sandwich, Ma, the Cape’s oldest town, the Daniel Webster Inn offers visitors and locals alike a fine place to stay and excellent meals.
On our visit Allison and I drove all the way over to Sandwich (about 40 minutes from Falmouth) and had lunch near the canal. Then we visited the Sandwich Glass Museum and learned how glassblowing and glassmaking made Sandwich a very prosperous town. I find that as I get older, all those trips that I was so bored with as a child are no very interesting. We saw a glassblowing demonstration and tours the substantial museum that had a large collection of Sandwich glass.
Once we were finished with our exploration we popped over to the Daniel Webster to check-in for our overnight stay. We were given an enormous suite completed with king size bed, fireplace, corner jacuzzi tub and private balcony. The balcony overlooked the beautiful garden and the pool.
The pool area was nice and secluded. Even though the restaurant parking lot was steps away you would never know it. There was a lush greenery all around the pool which was a good size for relaxation. We were all about the relaxation especially since the kids were with my parents overnight. There was also a hot tub, gazebo with rocking chairs and a cornhole game to play. Plenty of lounge chairs to lay out on and towels available.
After our time in the pool we showered and got ready for dinner. We met with Deb of the Catania Hospitality Group. Her family owns the Daniel Webster Inn, Hearth and Kettle Restaurants, The Cape Codder Resort and the John Carver Inn & Spa. Deb hosted us for the night and told us all about the Inn. After an incredible meal of Calamari, Lump Crab, Scallops, Boar, Pork Belly, Key Lime Pie and Raspberry Lemonade Tiramisu we were stuffed.
We walked through the property and took a look at some additional rooms including the Fesseden House. This house was so named for he family that owned the Inn long ago. The house was purchased by Deb’s father and he converted it into four suites. The thing that really impressed me about this was the use of so many of the original fixtures, molding and materials within the room. The attention to detail in all the decorating and the honoring of the history is what makes this location such a gem on Cape Cod.
We also toured the dining facilities on location which consisted of the large conservatory dining room, which was where we had dinner, the tavern and also several banquet rooms of various sizes. The Daniel Webster Inn can accommodate dining for a 180 guest wedding reception. Service was excellent, too. Our server, Brian had impeccable suggestions for meals and desserts.
Our room overlooked the garden and pool area. The next morning we enjoyed relaxing on our private balcony. That was after an excellent breakfast back in the conservatory. The restaurants are open year round and are not just for the guests of the Inn. They are open to the general public and while they are packed in the Winter there is more competition in the Summer. What people do not know or realize is that the prices are comparable to the surrounding dining establishments. The quality of the food is also excellent with many gourmet meals. Each item we had was amazing. Some of the best Calamari we have ever had, too.
After we checked out of the Inn we took a walk to downtown Sandwich. This is a quaint New England town with many eclectic shops. Allison and I wandered around poking through the shops and picking up some souvenirs for the family. This is definitely a place that we would love to come back to with the kids to see what other things Sandwich has to offer.
