Last night we went to the Boch Center Shubert Theatre to see A Charlie Brown Christmas Live on Stage. We were given press passes to attend the performance in order to review it. The show is at the Boch Center Shubert Theatre for a very limited engagement. In fact, tomorrow December 2 is the last day that the show will be there. So, if you want to get tickets and see the show today or tomorrow you can get them at Boch Center Tickets. There are 8 showings left. Four today and four tomorrow. The tickets are also inexpensive to see this show so it is a good family Christmas event.
Driving to boston is always a crazy thing for us. Getting out of school and getting something to eat in time for a 7pm show can be a bit tricky. Tonight was our closest call yet. We arrived and got to our seats right as the very first words were being spoken by Charlie and Linus at the snow covered wall.
The Shubert Theatre is a beautiful one and a great place to see a show. We were seated very quickly since we were almost the last people in the building (we were the last ones out, more on that later). Seats are fairly comfy and we had great views of the stage. I love how the band was made up of Schroeder, Shermy and PigPen. Schroeder and his piano was on one side of the stage and Shermy (on bass) and Pigpen (on drums) on the other. The sets were taken right out of the cartoon version of A Charlie Brown Christmas. They were even painted to have that authentic Charles M. Schulz look. It is a simple style, yet so iconic.
The kids loved the show and there were many children there. At the end the cast sings Christmas Carols and puts on the “Christmas play” that they are working on through the whole first act. I used Night Sight on my phone to capture Eva rapt in attention and Andrew just happy to be there enjoying the antics of Snoopy.
When I asked Andrew what his favorite part was he decided that it was Snoopy using a large candy cane to be the leader of a parade. There was a few parts where Snoopy would come out and do some silly things and it got all the kids laughing. From decorating his doghouse to using a remote control at the end of intermission to play with music, Snoopy had the kids howling with laughter. I really liked a few subtle things like when the cast was trying on costumes for the Christmas Play. There is a great nod to one of Snoopy’s personas during that segment.
After the show we met up with my giveaway winner and his family. He had a little something for the kids. That was very nice of him. I told the kids that they were very nice to give those things directly to me. Just kidding, they were new Transformers BotBots. We talked for a bit and then he took a family photo of us by the sign for the show.
Every year we like to do things to kick off the Christmas season. Things that are fun and great for the whole family. While we do our annual toy donation and shopping trip (later today) we also like to see and do things as a family that get us in the mood for the season. A Charlie Brown Christmas Live on Stage did just that. The whole audience was mesmerized by Linus’ meaning of Christmas speech, It was really well done. That just put things into perspective.
After the show we were in the lobby and chatting with our giveaway winner. Then the kids had to go to the facilities and we ended up in the lobby for a while longer. Eventually we were close to the last people there but the actor who played our Charlie Brown was out there and he was very gracious to take photos with people. He took a photo with us and took the time to speak with the kids. Eva was thrilled because she loves acting and when we were on the way to the car she gave us her latest career change which was to be an actor. Charlie was played by Jack Flatley and he was there with his mom. We ended up talking with both of them for a while and it was nice.
As we were leaving the venue Allison realized that she was missing an earring. We went back inside and one of the security guards helped us look. It was in her shawl in the end but everyone there at the theatre was very nice. There were lots of Merry Christmases as we were the last to leave. Below I have more information on the performance.
