Photo-A-Day #4366
Had another one of those days where time just got away from me. So, a video in my car is what I have for you today. But, not just that I have some trailers to show you and also a funny reaction trailer, not done by me, to share.
On my way into work I was thinking about the differences between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Cinematic Universe. It came to mind because the Justice League trailer recently came out and also a new video for Guardians of the Galaxy. I give a little bit of my thoughts in today’s video and there is more below, including the trailers and something extra.
First up is the new video for the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Marvel just evokes such great feeling for their characters. In one minute the whole deal is summed up perfectly. Who the Guardians are and what their job is. They are a thief, one thug, an assassin, a maniac and an angry little tree. The humor is spot on especially whenever Rocket speaks. The reactions between the characters are excellent as well. This team of very obscure characters, up until a few years ago when the first movie came out and was a huge success, are part of our mindset, now. We like them and we root for them to win. The tone is light despite their mission. The video is actually colorful in tone and palette. It is not dark. There is actual color. Brightly colored super heroes with over the top personalities, it should be colorful. The director, James Gunn, knows how to tell a compelling story. When I met him at the first movie, I could tell that he has put his whole heart into making the best movie that he can. It shows. See for yourself.

Now, on the other side we have the Justice League. Getting to this point has been a long time coming and there have been some bumps along the way. Characters have been poorly represented in the movies in motivation and tone. Having Superman destroy most of a city and then kill was so outside his character. Superman should be a bright shining beacon and he was a dark brooding loner. That is Batman’s job. Batman has been the one redeeming character in these movies. From Christian Bale to Ben Affleck, Batman has been the redeeming part of the movies. Having him unite the Justice League makes the most sense.
But this trailer, while pretty decent, is still so dark. Even with some great quips from Jason Moma’s Aquaman it still feels so dark. Let’s get some color into these movies. Batman should be the only one who has a dark costume. I’ll reserve full judgement for when I see the movie. I want to like this. I like the characters in the comics and I love the DC comics based television shows, too. They have a great tone for each. The movies have not captured that. However, before we get to the Justice League we have teh Wonder Woman movie to watch. If that hits the right tone then there is hope for the Justice League. Watch the trailer for your opinion.

After both of those videos you can watch this too see a very clever mashup where the Avengers react to seeing the new Justice League trailer. This was really well done. While it does seem to take shots at both sides I think, clearly that Marvel will come out on top.

Of course, when it comes to superhero movies, right now, they are like coffee. Everyone has their own preference. I like my coffee light from a company that seems to take more care, like Honey Dew. Others might like their coffee dark and churned out with little thought to quality, like DC. That is my opinions and it is neither right, nor wrong, just what I think. What do you think?
