Complete with the silly puns and goofy villains this Kim Possible movie delivers a powerful jump kick to your nostalgic heart. Take a look at the trailer.

I had been excited to see the Kim Possible movie ever since I heard it was being made. I caught it this morning on Disney Now and I really enjoyed it! I enjoyed the original cartoon, too, but did not watch it religiously. I can’t tell you everything that happened in all the episodes, but is enough in my wheelhouse that I can keep up with the best of them.

Leading up to the movie I was offered the chance to have a phone interview with Todd Stashwick who plays Dr. Drakken, a character that was voiced by voice over great, John DiMaggio. In my interview I learned that Todd and John are friends, have worked together and when he got the role John was the first person who called him to give his blessing. Todd makes a fantastic Dr. Drakken, too. He’s got the perfect look for the character. Todd was also a very personable guy and we had a fun interview together, lots of laughs. For a guy who plays such intense characters he was totally chill about everything even what comes next for him. There may be a lot more coming as he not only acts but writes as well, he screenrote "Suicide Squad 2," the sequel to the 2016 hit feature film, and co-wrote a Star Wars video game. And I’ll admit it. I now follow him on Instagram and he’s a geek as well, spent Valentine’s Day leveling up his D & D Character! He’s a sorcerer.

Todd Stashwick flexes this comedic chops as Dr. Drakken. From the first moment you meet him in the movie he makes you laugh. Todd actually started in comedy which is something I did not know at all from my years of watching him in network dramas like Burn Notice, Leverage, Weeds, Heroes and so many, many more shows. In those dramas where Todd comes in as a bad guy about to do bad things. But, even in those roles there is always something more to him than just a one dimensional bad guy. He brings something more to every role that he has. In the Kim Possible movie you have to watch his expressions and mannerisms. How he delivers lines and his physical comedy as well. Years working in improvisational and sketch comedy groups like The Second City in Chicago and Burn Manhattan in New York.

I asked Todd why he doesn’t do as much comedy on television. He quipped that he was more physically suited for these bad guy roles because, “I’m 6.2″ have dark circles on my eyes and a voice like a garbage disposal.” While that is true, you can certainly see the range there in his acting ability. After seeing the movie I want to see him in more comedy because he’s very good at it. I loved that in the movie there were some very self aware moments (from other characters, Dr. Drakken is so self-absorbed that he does not realize certain things) where people point out obvious things like trope of the villain revealing too much. Todd plays this Dr. Drakken with the complete overconfidence in his plan that is required of this character. No matter how many times Kim has defeated him in the past, he keeps insisting that his plan will prevail.

I asked Todd how familiar he was with the original series. He explained that his son, who is now 21 was at that age where he watched the show and Disney Channel was always on in their house. So this was a series that his son watched and now Todd also has an 11 year old daughter who is at the perfect age for this movie. I told him that I have an 11 year old daughter as well and he explained that while the movie is about a girl who saves the world, it is really about that transitional year between 8th grade and freshman year of high School. Where you go from being the big fish to the small fish is how Kim is such a relatable character in this movie and a role model for girls, and boys as well.

Todd plays so well off of Taylor Ortega who plays Shego, a super villain in her own right but is Drakken’s head henchwoman. She is the self-aware one and very competent. She is quite dangerous and a perfect adversary for Kim, Ron and their new friend Athena.

In the movie Kim not only saves the world but is embarking on a major undertaking… High School. For the girl who handles things she is not as prepared for this new adventure as she is in everything else. Kim has a crisis of epic proportions. Kim and Ron help a new friend named Athena and she quickly takes the spotlight off of Kim, who is already feeling inadequate. This is a completely new feeling for Kim who as been perfect at everything her whole life. She is finding failure at every turn. Lucky for Kim she is surrounded by friends who help her find what makes her possible once again.

The performance by Sadie Stanley was on point. When she was kicking butt as Kim she had a definite commanding persona. She was also able to be doubtful of herself and vulnerable when she realized that she needed help. It was interesting seeing Kim as insecure. It was good to see Ron step up and be that steadfast friend to her and tell her what she needed to hear not what she wanted to hear. Sean Giambrone did an excellent job as Ron Stoppable, Kim’s longtime friend and biggest cheerleader. Despite being accident prone he is always optimistic and approaches ever situation with childlike wonder. Meeting Rufus the Naked Mole Rat (a role reprised by Nancy Cartwright) was a cute moment.

I liked the story and how important friendship is in life. It was good to see a story where even the world’s greatest kid super hero has moments where she doubts herself. Dr. Drakken, in the words of Todd Stashwick, “He’s jealous of Kim, he’s a mean girl.”

I could see that. There are so many moments where Dr. Drakken is that mean girl from selfies to wanting to post fail videos of Kim being bested, he’s got the mean girl thing down.

Kim’s team would not be complete without her tech genius friend, Wade. Wade was played by Issac Ryan Brown of Raven’s Home. He got the cool job of helping Kim navigate everything from villainous lairs to her new High School. He always showed up at the right time to lend a hand.

A new character was added to the roster for the movie. This was the character of Athena. She is a mysterious girl who is be-friended by Kim and Ron. She quickly comes into her own. A lot happens around this character and you’ll have to watch the movie tonight to see how everything plays out but she is super cool new friend to Kim and Ron.

I have to mention that Kim’s mom is played by Alyson Hannigan. I have crushed on her ever since her days as Willow in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She does a nice job as Dr. Possible and a bit of her own butt kicking as well. A quick little Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon bit of trivia. Alyson was on Buffy and one of Todd’s first roles in LA was as a demon on Angel, a spin-off of Buffy. That might be a stretch of a connection but there you have it.

Will your kids enjoy the movie, I really hope so because it was good. Will you enjoy it? Yes, there is some good comedy and a great message overall to the movie. A lot of work was put in to the movie to pay tribute to the fans. There are a ton of Easter eggs that you can find in Kim’s room that superfans will love. Many people who worked on the original were on this to create, act and help. This includes Mark McCorkle and Robert Schooley the creators of the original cartoon. It also included the original voice of Kim Possible, Christy Carlson Romano.

I was a big fan of Christy Carlson Romano from her Even Stevens days and I will forever be a fan of Will Friedle from Boy Meets World to Batman Beyond and he will forever be the voice of Bumblebee for me. I was disappointed that he turned down the chance to cameo in the movie (but from the article I read, I can understand why he did not return and respect him for the decision). I liked that Christy did “Pop” in for a cameo.
