Avengers: Endgame – A Dolby Cinema Experience

I was invited by Dolby to attend a private screening of Avengers: Endgame in a Dolby theater in Boston tonight. Opinions are my own and any talk of the movie will be SPOILER FREE.

Ever since the release of Iron Man back in 2009 I have been obsessed with Marvel comic book movies. I have been so fortunate to attend red carpet premieres, special screenings and events that has continued to fuel my love for these movies. Tonight was the culmination of 10 years of Marvel Cinematic Universe movies in Avengers: Endgame. I had purchased a ticket to see the movie at my local theater but when I got the invite from Dolby to come in to Boston to the AMC South Bay Center to see the movie at a Dolby theater I was excited. I had not been to one of these theaters before and was interested to see the difference. Rather, I would hear and see the difference. I can safely say that I am ruined for life with seeing movies in any other type of theater.

The whole experience was so intense and thrilling. Before the movie we had a fun reception over at Wahlburgers and I met some other folks, mostly local college students, who were influences, radio station managers and college reporters. I really enjoyed chatting with all of them and I also enjoyed having some burgers, tots and a chocolate shake before the movie. I stopped drinking anything before the movie because it was 3 hours long. I was not missing a moment. A shake is ice cream, I reasoned.

The theater was huge, with very comfy seats and prior to the start of the movie Glenn Kiser, director of the Dolby Institute introduced the movie and the theater and discussed Dolby Cinema’s technologies – Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. He explained about how Dolby Atmos can pinpoint where to place sound in the theater and the sound can help drive the plot as much as the story and visuals. I had spoken with him a bit at the reception and was fascinated. I also made sure that I picked a seat near him because he would know exactly where to sit in the theater, even though there are no bad seats to be had.

Dolby Cinema moviegoers can expect the following:

Spectacular Imaging—With Dolby Vision, the picture comes alive with greater brightness and darker darks to offer a more lifelike sense of depth, rendering colors and detail unlike other movie theaters.

Immersive Audio—With Dolby Atmos, guests are transported inside the story with sound that flows all around them, including overhead. The sound in the cinema envelopes viewers, making the story their reality.

Reservable Recliner Seating—Moviegoers enjoy next-level comfort with spacious, innovative recliners that pulsate with the action.

In the Boston area, there are four Dolby Cinema locations: AMC Assembly Row 12, AMC Liberty Tree 20, AMC Methuen 20, and AMC South Bay Center 12.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I’m not going to go into specific points but as far as seeing the movie in a Dolby theater there is no comparison with other theaters. The sound is insane and things like missiles being launched could be tracked audibly across the room and then the impact was felt in the chairs. The screen was so crispy and clear as well. I was right into the movie the whole time.

LEGO Captain America vs the Outriders. An Avengers: Endgame Set

I’ve finally assembled all of the Avengers. Well, assembled maybe a strong word as these sets are mostly still in the boxes. I found all of the LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Avengers: Endgame sets and have started building them. I had been waiting for the sets to appear in the LEGO store so I could purchase them there and maybe get a special set of 4 minifigs that were Avengers themed. However, the sets weren’t available at that time and there weren’t any other sets that I wanted, so I missed out on that special set of figures. Now people are selling them on eBay for $70. It is crazy.

So I found the sets at Target and bought the Avengers: Endgame set, there are 5 of them. I built the smallest set tonight. That is the Captain America: Outriders Attack. It is a motorcycle with Captain America and three of the outrider attackers from Infinity War. We may be seeing them again in Endgame. That is, if the sets have any indication as to what will happen. Brian and I built the Avengers Compound Battle set and there was something inside that seemed a bit like a spoiler. I mention it in our Livestream but will leave it alone until after I see the movie.

This week I plan to build some more of the sets. I was doing a search for the four pack of figures and I see that there is a mini set of Avengers Tower with a special Iron Man figure. It is being sold everywhere on eBay for about $50. So I look to see if it is on the LEGO Shop and there it is as a free gift with purchase of $75. So I haven’t opened my Avengers Compound Battle set yet and so I can return it to Target. I placed my order on the Shop LEGO site and got that new little set. I am thinking I may also return the Ultimate Quinjet and do the same thing with that and get a second Avengers Tower set. That I can sell on eBay.
