Legend of Zelda, GLOW on Netflix #StreamTeam and Water Drop Lilies

Water Drop Lilies
Photo-A-Day #4457

The lilies in our yard have finally started blooming. We have a bunch of them in the yard. There is a large concentration of them in a spot where we buried the cats. Eva and Andrew want me to dig them (the lilies) up when if and when we move. Probably because we have told the kids that the cats are now part of the lilies and so we take the lilies, we take the cats.

On the Legend of Zelda front I am .09% away from being 100% complete. The thing is, I have no idea exactly where I have to go to find the last location. I have gone through the interactive map and still can’t find the missing location. So now I’ve printed out all of the locations and will have to do a checklist to find what I am missing. I’m trying to get this all done before next Friday when the DLC pack comes out with even more things to do in Hyrule.

I just finished watching a new Netflix series called GLOW. It is a half hour comedy about the creation of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling or GLOW. The show is so full of 80’s Easter Eggs. References to everything from leotards and leg warmers to Back to the Future. There is even a training montage complete with Stan Bush’s “Dare”. The show stars Allison Brie and Marc Maron and is very cheesy but funny at the same time. I do hope that there will be a second season because I’d like to know where things go next.

Whats-In-Your-Queue_May

As a Member of the Netflix #StreamTeam I am provided with free Netflix and additional compensation. Opinions about Netflix are my own. Each month I write something new about Netflix and this month I am talking about how Netflix lets you enjoy your entertainment on your own schedule.

Personally, I am no stranger crazy schedules. I work weekend nights from 7pm to 7am and during that time I have been known to stream a show or two while working on projects. There are so many options for shows to watch. This past weekend I discovered the show Riverdale. All 13 episodes of first season are on Netflix. They were riveting and I couldn’t look away. As I worked on some mundane stuff the antics of Betty, Veronica, Jughead and Archie played in the background.

House of Cards Season 5

I’m always looking for something new to watch. It can be Master of None or The Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt at 3am for some laughs to keep the night going. It can also be The Last Kingdom, Sense 8 or Longmire during my break because those are shows I really want to be able to focus on. Then during the week we’re watching Phineas and Ferb, Fuller House, Dinotrux, Inspector Gadget (Season 3 back 6/2), Masha’s Spooky Stories and whatever else Andrew discovers. If Allison and I get some time to ourselves we watch shows like Bloodline (the Final Season was released 5/26) and Orange is the New Black (which returns for Season 5 on June 9th). Eventually I’m going to start watching House of Cards which returns for Season 5 on May 30th. That will give me weekend break time viewing for weeks. Set in Prince Edward Island in the late 1890s, the series centers on Anne Shirley (Amybeth McNulty), a young orphaned girl who, after an abusive childhood spent in orphanages and the homes of strangers, is mistakenly sent to live with an aging sister and brother. Over time, 13-year-old Anne will transform the lives of Marilla (Geraldine James) and Matthew Cuthbert (R.H. Thomson) and eventually the entire small town in which they live with her unique spirit, fierce intellect and brilliant imagination. Anne’s adventures will reflect timeless and topical issues including themes of identity, feminism, bullying and prejudice.

Our Netflix StreamTeam contacts sent us the fun “Anne with an E” care package. It came complete with some Kindred Spirits buttons for Eva to share with her best fried as well as tissues for those episodes that will make you cry and also a copy of Anne of Green Gables plus a notebook to write all of Eva’s imaginary stories.

Eva and Andrew and Allison watched the 90 minute first episode. Allison liked it very much. I think that she read the book as a child. I never read the book myself, but I’ve heard many good things about it. Eva was more interested in getting into reading the book then watching the show. She is much more interested in books these days, which is great. I think that after she reads the book she’s going to want to watch the series. I think that I should read the book as well.

A Focus on Strong Female Characters in this Month’s #StreamTeam Post

Julies Greenroom
(Photo: Ali Goldstein/Netflix)

I came downstairs today to find that Andrew had, completely on his own, discovered Julie’s Greenroom. This is a brand new show starring Julie Andrews. This new show debuted on March 17th and I’ve been meaning to watch it with Andrew and Eva. He beat me to it and he absolutely loved it. how do I know, he watched the first episode 3 times today. Once on his own, once with me and once with my mom. I thought it was cute and my mother loved it. I think she liked it even more than Andrew.

The very first episode starts off and introduces the cast which consists of human characters and puppet characters including a puppet duck and puppet dog. The main point of the show is to advocate for the arts and the positive impact that creativity can have on every child’s life. There are even special guests including Idina Menzel, Sara Bareilles and Alec Baldwin to name a few. Idina Menzel was in the first episode.

the show is really cute and full of great information about the arts. The show is brought to life by the Jim Henson Company and looks to be something that will capture the attention of kids (and parents) everywhere. If you’d like, I have some Conversation Starters About Julie’s Greenroom. Continue reading A Focus on Strong Female Characters in this Month’s #StreamTeam Post

Two great Netflix Show Panels at Wondercon: Trollhunters and Voltron #StreamTeam

Trollhunters Wondercon Litho

If you are going to attend Wondercon then there are a couple of interesting panels happening with great Netflix shows. As a family we have watched both Trollhunters and Voltron. Both shows are amazing and we cannot wait for more seasons to come out. I had the pleasure of meeting the showrunners for Voltron last year and also some of the amazing voice talent. I think that the Voltron panel is going to be awesome especially after two great seasons. Here are some details on both the panels. Can You Fight the Temptation to Cheat? – #StreamTeam

Incidents of cheating are on the rise. People are cheating on their spouses, kids and friends. Some people are unabashedly cheating and some are trying to do it covertly. No matter how they do it and to whom they do it to, cheating is increasing. I’m not talking about marital infidelity, I’m talking about Netflix infidelity. With so many binge-worthy shows on Netflix it can often be hard not to cheat. I know that I struggle with this often. I usually have more time to watch shows that Allison does. I can watch shows as I work, on nights when she is out, right before I sleep for the day on the weekends and during my breaks at work. Allison has time to herself when I am at work or out filming Built from Bricks or SteamDads.

We have a core of shows that we watch together. Those ones that are most important to watch together we make sure to watch together. The hard part is when a show may contain major developments and we want to make sure that we are not spoiled. If we have to wait till after most people have watched it, then it makes avoiding spoilers so much more difficult.

With Netflix it makes trying not to cheat even harder. Full seasons get released and when that happens so many possible spoilers are out there that it makes it hard to go slow with a season. I ran into that issue during the most recent season of Voltron: Legendary Defender. I wanted to know how it all ended for the season but made the choice to watch it with the kids because it was something that they really enjoyed. I couldn’t go and watch it without them, even though they did it to me with Skylanders Academy. But, two wrongs don’t make a right so I made sure that we only watched Season 2 of Voltron: Legendary Defender together. Finding a show that both kids love and can enjoy together with me is a big deal. With a four year difference between them and different tastes, finding something we can all agree on is a challenge so when we do it is important to experience it together. It is not like I would go watching the show while they slept.

DreamWorks Dragons Race to the Edge Season 4 is On Netflix This Friday!

Dragons Race to the Edge

I have to admit, I got way behind on Dragon Riders: Race to the Edge. I love the How To Train Your Dragon Series very much. It is something really funny and emotional that resonated with me. I watched all of the first season and most of the second a couple of the third but I think I should go back to the beginning and watch How To Train Your Dragon 1 and then Dragon Riders: Race to the Edge and then How To Train Your Dragon 2 in preparation for the upcoming How To Train Your Dragon 3. I want to see where the story goes. I also think that the kids and I should start reading How to Train Your Dragon book series. We made it to number 11 but never read the final chapter. That was something that Eva and I really enjoyed together. Now we could bring Andrew into it as well.

Season 2 of Trollhunters Confirmed by Netflix #StreamTeam

TrollHunters Season 2 Teaser

I just learned that Season 2 for the amazing show Trollhunters has been confirmed. While it will only be 13 episodes, I am sure that they will be incredible. This was a great show to watch with the kids. Andrew and Eva both loved it. We laughed and we all cried in the Season 1 finale. This show has a lot of heart and I cannot wait to see what is next for Jim and the Trollhunters. Here is the official description.

“Guillermo Del Toro’s Trollhunters confirmed for a second season! DreamWorks Animation and Netflix announced today that a second season of 13 episodes will debut later this year. Jim ventures deeper into the Troll world to battle the vicious leader of the Darklands, while his team works to maintain order in the human world.”
