Walking 4 2ND Base

A friend of mine at Work, Sue is participating in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. The title of this post is her team name, Walking 4 2ND Base. I thought it was a very funny team name and it brings me back to my previous posts about Green M&M’s the disappearance of light brown M&Ms and ‘the bases’.

Sue sent me this message

Did you know that three million women are living with breast cancer–and one third don’t even know it? Even more startling, breast cancer kills aprox. one woman every 14 minutes, robbing us of our mothers and grandmothers, our sisters and aunts, cousins and best friends. Thirteen years ago it robbed me of my grandmother.

On May 17th and 18th I will be walking in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. The walk is 39.3 miles through Boston. I’ve already begun training and will try to update my page weekly with my progress. My team is called Walking 4 2ND Base.

  1. That’s cool! I wanted to do the Avon walk, but they are not having one in my area. I am still considering the SGK 3-Day, but I’m nervous about raising $5000!

  2. It is pretty cool. My wife is looking at doing the SGK 3-Day again. I think the total to raise is only $2200 though. She did it back a few years ago. I say go for it.

  3. I love the name of the team. It reminds me of this story. I hope you don’t mind me posting it, but it pretty neat.

SALINA, Kan. — Two Salina Central High School seniors designed T-shirts to raise money for breast cancer awareness, but an assistant principal banned one of the designs from school.

Haley Wenthe’s mother died from breast cancer five years ago, and Jessica Sheahon’s mom recently completed chemotherapy. So they set out to raise $10,000 during October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

But Assistant Principal Linn Exline told them that one of the designs crossed the line and she forbid the shirts from being sold or worn at school.

The shirts bear the phrase “Save 2nd Base” with a pair of baseballs over the wearers’ breasts. Officials said the shirts violate the district’s dress code, which bans clothing with an “implied indecent meaning.”

The girls explain that “2nd Base” refers to making out that involves touching girls’ breasts. The idea isn’t original — it’s the trademark of a Pennsylvania group named for a mother who died from breast cancer last year.

I tried to get the original news story but could not find it, sorry.

    Cheers

  4. I’ve been to Salina Kansas if you could believe the coincidence. I loved going to a Buffalo Farm near there.

But to the point of your comment. Thanks very much. I can’t believe that 2nd base got trademarked. At least for a good cause. Thanks for sending me the story, if you can find the original please let me know.
