Eva has her very first school dance tonight. Dances at her school are for grades 6 – 8 but the last dance of the year is called the Aloha dance because it is a welcome hello to the 5th graders and a celebratory goodbye to the 8th grade. I love that the school does these sort of right of passage events. Eva was so thrilled to attend. She and Allison found her the beautiful dress and she had her hair done up and was just so excited to go and dance with her friends.
Her good friend Maryana came to the house beforehand to take photos with Eva and also to finish getting ready and have Allison take them to the dance. Maryana’s mom would pick them up and take them home for the dance later on. I love how excited Eva was over seeing her friend in a cute dress. The two of them had fun taking photos in the backyard against the Rhododendrons. They made for a good festive backdrop.
It was a big night for us. Seeing Eva off to her first dance. I thought back to the dances that I had in that same church hall as a kid. I hoped that she would have a good time. I wondered of she’d dance a slow dance with any of the boys. She did not. She and her girlfriends all danced together. That is how it is with the fifth graders. No one is crossing that line between boys and girls and dancing together. That is fine with me. Let her just enjoy things as a kid for a while longer. She was all smiles and happy when she came home, she had received multiple leis including one that was made out of candy. One of her classmates brought them for everyone. I noticed that he was the only boy in all the photos that Allison took of the kids when she dropped Eva off. I also notice that Eva mentions him a lot and gets mad at me if I mention his name. So.. there’s that.
