Review: GoFlex Net – Getting Personal Across the Distance

My 1TB GoFlex Home and my GoFlex Net
with a 1TB (black) and a 500GB GoFlex Ultra-Portable drive(blue)

I received a bunch of great Seagate GoFlex products to try out in our home and I am really very thrilled to get this chance to work with a company that I like very much. I’ve been using the Seagate GoFlex Ultra-Portable Hard Drive on a daily basis. I actually have two of them. There is one that I use to back up all the computers in the house. I just plug it into the computers and they automatically get backed up. That is, once I set up the backup software from Memeo. You get a free lite version and if you want enhanced features like more control over what you back up then you have to pay for the pro version.

One of the devices in the GoFlex ecosystem is the GoFlex Net. This device connects to your network and allows you to share directories on the drives attached to the GoFlex Net. You can share any directory on your connected drives with anyone that you want via Pogoplug. Pogoplug is pretty amazing. I was able to add all of our photos from our recent Disney trip to a GoFlex Ultra-Portable Drive connect that directly into the GoFlex Net and then share that Disney 2010 folder with anyone I wanted to share it with. This is a great way to privately share photos with family and friends via the Internet but never having to upload them to the Internet.

I was able to take the 26,145 files in the Eva folder (yeah, I take a lot of photos and videos of her) and put them on the GoFlex Ultra-Portable Drive and then easily share that entire directory with all of the family via Pogoplug. I just learned that there is a Pogoplug app for the Droid and other Mobile phones so I can access all of my photos of Eva from my phone at any time. Amazing.

The GoFlex Net has two spaces for GoFlex Ultra-Portable drives. You can connect any size drive too. There are GoFlex Ultra-Portable drives from 320GB – 1.5TB. These devices are different physical sizes the 1TB enclosure is bigger than the 320GB drive enclosure so you can start off with a 320GB drive and move up to the 1.5TB drive and the GoFlex Net expands easily with you (Special slots and slot inserts to hold both ultra-portable drive sizes). At this time you can have 3TB (Two 1.5TB GoFlex Ultra-Portable Drives) of online storage that you can access at any moment via the Internet that is secure to only you and those you trust is amazing. But beyond that you can also connect any USB hard drive to the GoFlex Net and further expand the storage. If you connect another Go Flex Drive like the GoFlex Desk then you can further daisy chain out for unlimited storage.

You can further pair the GoFlex Net with the GoFlex TV and you are able to stream all of your Movies, Music and Photos quickly and easily across your network. Imagine having all of your DVDs, CDS and Photos in Digital format that is accessible at any time and yet you never have to store another DVD case or CD case again. You can free your content to be where you want when you want it.

Disclosure: I received a number of Seagate devices including the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1 TB USB 2.0 Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive, GoFlex Home, GoFlex TV and GoFlex Net. I’ll be talking about these devices in the coming months. The opinions about the devices are 100% mine.

  1. That’s pretty amazing having it all stored and eliminating the need to keep DVD and Cd cases around. Plus photo sharing without having to upload is fab!

    1. Deborah,

There are some really great features for this, I’m enjoying these devices. I need to find the right software for ripping DVDs.

  2. Hi Ben,

Very nice review – I have been looking for some external storage options for all the video and photos I have. I like the idea of being able to share with people online without having to upload anything.

If you are looking for DVD ripping, I have had decent success with using DVDFab Passkey and XMedia Recode – both free and work pretty well (I have no connection with either company).

    Thanks,
    Dan

    1. Hi Dan,

Thanks very much. I was thinking of buying the Divx software to rip my DVDs, the GoFlex TV is a Divx device. I will check those software options out as well though. I really liked your review of the PlaySport, sorry it didn’t work out well for you. I’ve been very fortunate with mine.
