With the release of Maleficent this month I think that Disney is banking on taking some of their more popular and iconic characters from their animated movies and making live action movies that tell more of the story. Little under a year from now another iconic Disney character will be reborn in live action. This time the movie is about one of the most iconic Disney Princesses ever, Cinderella. This live action movie will be inspired by the 1950s animated classic and promises to be visually stunning.
Directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring veterans of shows like Game of Thrones and Downton Abbey as well as stars like Cate Blanchett and Helena Bonham-Carter the casting and acting is being taken seriously. We’ll be taking Eva to go see this for sure.

The story of “Cinderella” follows the fortunes of young Ella (Lily James) whose merchant father remarries following the death of her mother. Eager to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophie McShera) into the family home. But, when Ella’s father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.” She will not give in to despair nor despise those who mistreat her. And then there is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. Unaware that he is really a prince, not merely an apprentice at the Palace, Ella finally feels she has met a kindred soul. It appears her fortunes may be about to change when the Palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, raising Ella’s hopes of once again encountering the charming Kit (Richard Madden). Alas, her stepmother forbids her to attend and callously rips apart her dress. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand, and a kindly beggar woman (Helena Bonham-Carter) steps forward and – armed with a pumpkin and a few mice – changes Cinderella’s life forever.

I was almost lost by the person playing Cinderella-I’m not a fan…but I can’t miss it when I read about Daisy from Downton Abbey playing Drisella…and almost fell out of my chair at the thought of Robb Stark gracing the screen as royalty…once again! Just please…keep him away from the Queen of Hearts (different movie…I know…but it makes me nervous!) Ha!
Mo,
I can’t say that I know who the lead is in this but the rest of the cast looks solid enough. Let’s just hope there are no weddings.
A) after all the Transformers and such that Allison watches…how have you missed the train to DA?!
2) don’t worry…you won’t like her either. I’d have preferred Kristen Bell but Disney hasn’t hired me for consulting…yet…
D) seriously? You don’t watch DA?! You’re missing out!!!
Mo,
The amount of things I do watch is staggering to comprehend DA has not made the queue yet. There is a ton more geek stuff out there that I watch that Allison doesn’t and I just haven’t gotten into DA. I’d probably like it though.
Oh man, Kristen Bell would have been great, but I imagine Cinderella tall, and she is tiny. I know she’d be great, she was awesome in Veronica Mars and is good in House of Lies as well.
My inner 10-year-old is pretty excited for this.
It seems to me that Disney is forever mining it’s own past successes – even Pirate of the Caribbean was based on the ride. it was meant to one of a series based on Disney Park Rides (Remember Eddie Murphy in The Haunted House?).
Perhaps they are hoping that Parents that sat through this story as children themselves will come with the kids?
