I went to see Black Panther this morning. I have been eagerly awaiting the release of this movie. I’ve wanted to know more about this character since his appearance in Captain America: Civil War. Black Panther was an electric character and stole many great moments in the movie. There were some fantastic action sequences that were really intense. So, I wanted to see more.

Before I hit the movie, though I put together one of the Black Panther LEGO Sets. I put it together live on an episode of Built from Bricks. Brian was off traveling the country and exploring caves but he did have time to pop in to the chat room. However, for some reason the chat does not show up on the video. I set it up and for some reason it didn’t work live. You can see the video below.

The set that I built was set #76100 – Royal Talon Fighter Attack. The set contains four minifigs including Black Panther, Nakia, Killmonger and Ulysses Klaue. The ship is a pretty cool one. I had my doubts before buying the set and many people were not fans of it, either. But, building it was very cool and it looks great, it is a super solid build, too.

I saved the other set for after seeing the movie. I wanted to see what they did with the Rhinos in the movie. I like the Rhino part of the set. I really don’t need the mine cart and I would have liked to have seen Shuri in one of the sets. I really liked her in the film.

Back to the movie. I went to my local theater and the parking lot was completely packed. I was freaking out a bit, but I remember that I live near Hasbro. Hasbro had rented out the entire theater to show the film for the employees. They do that sort of thing when a major movie comes out that they produce the toys for. So, I was able to get a ticket and see the 11am showing. There were plenty of people in the theater.

I enjoyed the story here. Black Panther is a totally different character in that he’s a super hero but also a king. He has to balance being a super hero and ruling an incredibly technologically advanced nation. He is also a grieving son. His father, the former king died in Captain America: Civil War. T’Challa comes home to assume the mantle of king. There are some challenges and ceremony that connects him to the past. This movie introduces fans to the spiritual realm like Ant-Man introduced fans to the Microverse and in Doctor Strange we learned about the Multiverse. This was a moving movie. I had some tears toward the end of the movie and in many of the scenes between T’Challa and T’Chaka. Those father and son moments get me every time. This movie was filled with so much action but at the heart it was about family and taking care of each other.

T’Challa has a dual role in the movie as both King and the protector of Wakanda, The Black Panther.

As the Black Panther, T’Challa must protect everything in Wakanda and as he is part of the team of super heroes he will become an Avenger in the future, too.

The king of Wakanda is protected by the Dora Milaje and the general of that special forces unit of women is Okoye. She is one of my favorite characters from the movie. She has some amazing action scenes, too.

I think, however that the breakout character of the movie was Shuri. She is the younger sister of T’Challa and is a technological genius on par or greater than Tony Stark.

M’Baku is the leader of the Jabari Tribe. He challenges T’Challa for the throne. He’s a much more complex character than you would expect and they change his character a bit for the film.

Martin Freeman gets an expanded role in this movie and a chance to be a bigger hero. Ulysses Klaue shows up in the movie as well and he has a new hand after having it chopped off by Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron. He has enhanced it to have a sonic weapon that is enhanced by vibranium which he stole from Wakanda.

Erik Killmonger is the main villain of the movie. He has a mysterious link to Wakanda that is explored through the movie. Michael B. Jordan finally gets to have a great super hero role.
