Crayola sent us a Crayola Crayon Melter for free to play with and to review because I am doing a Twitter Party on 12/20 at 11am about the product. You can RSVP to participate by going to http://bit.ly/meltncreatersvp and following the hashtag #MeltNCreate on Twitter.
We first saw the Crayon Melter at Sweet Suite where Andrew and Eva got to try it out. Andrew enjoyed this product very much and made a really nice Lion. The Lion and the Fish are two designs that come with the Crayon Melter set. You can purchase additional sets like the Canvas Art accessory pack and a Sticker Art Set accessory to go with your Melter! The melter comes with 8 unwrapped crayons but if your house is anything like ours then I am sure you can find a bunch of wrapped and unwrapped crayons that you’d like to melt. For those already wrapped crayons the set comes with a label cutter so that you can easily remove wrappers. You can see it in action in our video below.
Using the crayon melter is easy. You plug it in to start. Load in an unwrapped crayon and wait until the green LED light comes on. Then the crayon melter is ready to be used. When you want to use another color you finish up what you were doing with the first color, load the next crayon, wait 30 seconds and then continue on. There will be some overlap in the color so you might want a scrap paper so that you can use that for the in-between colors Personally, I like to just use whatever comes through.
The Crayon Melter is for ages 8+. Andrew can use it fine with our supervision. He’s not going to burn himself on the melter because it has a low-heat tip. Most of the heating happens around the crayon on the inside. The Crayon Melter can be used like a marker. It is slightly larger in diameter than a marker but can still be used in a regular writing grip. You do want to be holding the melter straight up and down, however. This is the best way to get nice even strokes.
You can use the Crayon Melter on a variety of surfaces including wood, glass, canvas, and more. The set comes with two pieces of traceable art and a practice sheet. I recommend making copies of these especially if you have more than one kid because both kids will probably want to do both images.
