If you have been following this blog then you know that as a family we went to see The Lion King in 3D a week or so ago. Eva did not enjoy herself because it was too loud and she started out scared from a 3D trailer for Happy Feet 2. Well, when the movie was over she told me that if we got a copy of The Lion King on DVD that we should sell it. The next day the DVD arrived for this review. I left it on the kitchen counter and Eva found it. She promptly told Allison that she loved the movie and wanted to watch it at night. Huh? Who is this kid who emotionally drained us when we watched it in 3D? No matter she’s all about The Lion King now.
The Lion King is one of Allison’s favorite movies ever and our family collection of Disney movies had an empty slot because somehow neither of us bought the movie when it originally was released. Now with the movie on Blu-ray and DVD in one set we can enjoy the movie over and over as a family. In between singing “the Tide is Hive” Eva has been singing songs from The Lion King. She gets giggly and terrified when I quote Scar (her least favorite character) and she loves when we pretend to be the hyenas saying “Mufasa!” Eva even had Allison color in a giant Crayola poster of Mufasa that hangs on her closet door now.
The Lion King is a great movie for many reasons. For one thing it talks about death. We’ve had a lot of loss around our family and friends lately and Eva has been to wakes and funerals with us. We don’t hide her away from death but give her the opportunity to say goodbye. So, when Mufasa died it was heartbreaking to me as Eva asked me if he was sleeping or napping. I’m watching the screen and seeing her sad little face asking em about Mufasa, Simba is nuzzling his fallen father and I said to her with tears in my eyes, “No, he’s dead” and I hugged her closer.
While the movie is an emotional one and might be tough for sensitive little souls like Eva. Parents should be aware of that but also that kids do bounce back and can still enjoy the fun songs from the movie. Eva giggled along with Timon and Pumba. She loves Hakuna Matada and also I Just Can’t Wait To Be King. The Lion King is a wonderful family movie from Disney that we are happy to add to our collection and watch over and over. The movie has not been available in any form since 2004 so don’t miss your chance before ti disappears again. And on Diamond Edition Blu-ray there are some awesome bonus features like.

ABOUT THE LION KING:
An unforgettable story, breathtaking animation, beloved characters and award-winning music sets the stage for “The Lion King”, a Disney classic that follows the adventures of Simba, the feisty lion cub who “just can’t wait to be king.” But his envious Uncle Scar has plans for his own ascent to the throne, and he forces Simba’s exile from the kingdom. Alone and adrift, Simba soon joins the escapades of a hilarious meerkat named Timon and his warmhearted warthog pal, Pumbaa.
Adopting their carefree lifestyle of “Hakuna Matata,” Simba ignores his real responsibilities until he realizes his destiny and returns to the Pride Lands to claim his place in the “Circle of Life.” The all-star vocal talents—including Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane, Whoopi Goldberg, James Earl Jones, Jeremy Irons, Ernie Sabella, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Robert Guillaume, Cheech Marin and Moira Kelly—rip-roaring comedy and uplifting messages of courage, loyalty and hope make this a timeless tale for all ages. Produced by Don Hahn and directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff from a script by Irene Mecchi, Jonathan Roberts and Linda Woolverton, “The Lion King” is rated G by the MPAA.

Lion King was my favorite movie when I was a kid. I’m going to have to buy the set now for my toddler so it can be his favorite too 🙂
Tanya,
Definitely get it before it is gone. We were without The Lion King and I’d hate to have missed it this time around, too.
