DVD Review: Transformers Prime Season 3

Transformers Prime Blu-ray box art full

I received a copy of the season 3 Blu-ray for Transformers Prime: Beast Hunters. The final 13 episodes of my most favorite Transformers series ever. Opinions of the Blu-ray are based upon my personal viewing and bias to Transformers as I’ve been collecting them for 10 years. They are 100% my own.

My collection of Transformers Prime Blu-rays is complete. I now have the (short) Season 3 Blu-ray set that collects all of the third season plus some fun extras like the Hasbro Studios panel at San Diego Comic Con as well as more commentary from the show’s actors and creators, writers and producers. I haven’t been able to go through the whole series yet on the Blu-ray but I did watch every episode as it came out on The Hub.

I was disappointed to get a shortened season and I think that there could have been much more to add to the series but I’m greedy in that way because this was the very best Transformers series I have ever seen. And being a fan from 1984 that is saying something. It was a perfect blend of keeping true to the original G1 series and then incorporating all those series that came after it including the movies.

One thing that carried over from the movies was Bumblebee’s inability to speak. That irked me but I was finally rewarded with the best possible voice for Bumblebee in Will Friedle. When Bumblebee speaks for the very first time in this series it has such a weight behind it. I cried a little, I was tired. Bumblebee was that kind of character who in G1 was the one who meshed best with the humans. Being unable to speak, though, did not mean that he could not communicate. The relationship with Raf was an important one and when Bumblebee speaks to Raf for the first time it has such meaning.

This final season saw the Autobots on the run from the Decepticons. Would Optimus Prime die? Would another bot become the Prime? Would they find each other and defeat the Decepticons? So many questions and on top of that some new major threats in the form of Predaking and Shockwave. Continue reading DVD Review: Transformers Prime Season 3

DVD Review: Monsters University

Monsters University 3D Bluray Combo Art

I was sent a 3D Blu-ray combo pack to watch and review. Opinions of the movie are 100% my own.

Back in April I attended Monsters University on the Pixar Campus. It was an amazing couple of days meeting the movie’s director, producer and so many great people from Pixar. While I was at Pixar I screened the first 40 minutes of the movie. Later, when the movie came to theaters I took Eva and watched nearly the entire thing in a seat, the last 10 minutes or so is pretty intense and a bit scary for our little ones. Now, the movie is out to buy and we have a copy in our home. The whole family sat down to watch it and enjoyed it, up to the last 10 minutes where we sent the kids to bed and finished watching after they went to bed. Monsters University is a very good family film. You might want to watch it once through for the end stuff in case your children are prone to being frightened.

Monsters, Inc. 3D Blu-ray Ultimate Collector’s Pack Review

Monsters Inc Ultimate Collector's Edition Pack Shot

We missed Monsters, Inc. when it returned to theaters in 3D. Luckily the TV I won last year is a 3D TV and with our 3D Blu-ray player we were able to experience a movie that we love in a whole new way. Monsters, Inc. is one of those wonderful fun and imaginative movies that turns a known concept on its ear. In this case it is monsters under the bed or in the closet in this case. The monsters who are scaring kids are doing a job and like any job there are on the job perils and big time corporations looking at the bottom line instead of what really matters. In this case the corporation believes that children are toxic to monsters and try and keep anyone quiet who learns otherwise. Our heroes not only learn the truth but learn that the laughter of a child provides more energy for Monstropolis than even the highly sought after screams.

It was nice to see Mike and Sulley up to their antics in a whole new way, 3D. There are also tons of great extras in the DVD set including the 3D Blu-ray, the regular Blu-ray, DVD and Digital copy. With this set you are completely covered for any type of media playback device you might have. There are also a bunch of fun extras including a funny sneak peek at the upcoming Monsters University movie where we will see how Mike and Sulley met. More info below. Review: Peter Pan Diamond Edition Blu-ray

We watched the Diamond Edition Blu-ray of Peter Pan this afternoon. Eva enjoyed most of the movie but she has always been afraid of Captain Hook. The only version of Captain Hook that she is not afraid of is the one from Jake and the Never Land Pirates. She was also afraid of the Indians. She loved so many portions of the movie but since she’s a sensitive kid overall she said that she didn’t like the movie. I’m just pretty sure that she couldn’t separate the scenes with Hook with the fact that everything works out in the end. Continue reading Review: Peter Pan Diamond Edition Blu-ray

I sincerely loved Wreck=It Ralph and was so excited to see it a second time with Eva and Allison. I saw it at an early preview and loved the movie. Well, it is going to be soon but even sooner is the release of the movie digitally! Wow! This is a first and very, very cool.

Review: Finding Nemo 3D Blu-Ray/DVD Combo Pack

When Finding Nemo came back out in theaters in 3D I took Eva to go and see it. Finding Nemo is one of those movies that Eva loves to watch but at the same time she is afraid of it. Of course the sharks starting to frenzy in 3D is a bit terrifying even for parents, especially if you are terrified of sharks. But with the sharks aside (And I love that the Great White is named Bruce which was he name of the model shark in the movie Jaws) the movie is really cute and funny. Eva loves it because of Ellen and pretty much only likes those parts with her.

Finding Nemo is an adorable movie and for the first time it is available in High Definition in a Blu-Ray combo pack, there are a few versions out including a 3D version. We just got the straight up Blu-Ray and DVD version with an extra Blu-Ray with extra features. The extra features are a nice inclusion onto the set and the movie looks incredible in Hi-Def as well. It is certainly one we will continue to watch over and over, especially as we introduce Andrew to movies. Knowing him, he’ll probably laugh at the shark and not be afraid at all. DVD Review: G.I. Joe Renegades the Complete First Season on Blu-ray

GI Joe RenegadesWhen I heard that there was going to be a G.I. Joe show coming to Hasbro’s network, the Hub, I was excited. I was the kid who would go home from school grab a stack of Ritz crackers and watched an hour of Hasbro programming including Transformers and G.I. Joe. I was also collecting the G.I. Joe comic books and had a few of the toys so I am familiar with the whole G.I. Joe story. So, to see this new G.I. Joe story about a small group of “ordinary joes” on the run not only from Cobra but from their own government I was excited.

The opening sequence has a very “A-Team” vibe to is which added to the coolness factor for me. The story starts with some young soldiers picked to accompany an information specialist to a Cobra facility. The thing is, in this series Cobra looks to be a legitimate business, they are a mega conglomerate that is everywhere, they have retail stores and sell to the government and pretty much are a part of everything. Their founder Adam DeCobray, is a reclusive man who is actually a hologram, a disguise for the insidious Cobra Commander. But the world loves DeCobray and so when the spy mission that the joes are on goes awry and the joes blow up the Cobra facility they are labeled as terrorists and must go on the run.

That is basically what happens in the first two episodes and from there the joes continue to run from Cobra and from other well known joes like Flint and Lady Jaye. Along the way they run into series favorites like Zartan, Destro, Tomax and Xamot. The way each character is introduced is a fun spin on what we already know. Sometimes it is obvious right off the bat and sometimes it sneaks up on you. I really liked it when they caught up with my favorite character, Shipwreck.

The series was a good one and I really wished that it would have continued to a second season but luckily there is a resolution to the series and that was satisfying. Continue reading DVD Review: G.I. Joe Renegades the Complete First Season on Blu-ray
