There is so much happening on PBS Kids lately and even more things coming. Because I’m a PBS Kids VIP I’ve gotten some news about upcoming shows, new apps and more that I’d love to share.
Eva and I are working on reviewing a brand new app based on the wildly popular Wild Kratts show. This time it is a math based app called Creature Math and so far it is pretty cool. Kids set up animal habitats and in order to keep the animals happy the kids have to solve math problems. It is a resource management game but instead of collecting crops and such kids have to solve math problems. I’ll have a full review of that soon.
March 2nd is Dr. Suess’ birthday and there will be some all new Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That episodes showing on Friday March 1st. I guess the Cat likes to celebrate early. Here is a trailer for that episode.
There is also a brand new Cat in the Hat based online game launching on that day. You can check that out at http://pbskids.org/catinthehat
The Lorax comes out on Blu-ray today. We saw this movie at the theater with Eva and she really enjoyed it. I thought it was pretty cute and fun and stayed true to the heart of Dr. Seuss’ vision for the book. We had been reading the book to Eva every night for a week leading up to the release of the movie and she got into it and looked forward to the reading o the book. Now she can enjoy the movie again and again on Blu-ray.
We received a 2D copy of the movie to review. The movie is even more fun on Blu-ray. I watched many of the special features like EXPEDITION TO TRUFFULA VALLEY. This feature allows you to tour the valley and learn more about the inhabitants like the Bar-ba-loots and the Lorax and more. Each character has a bio page and a couple of videos including a drawing session with a story animator. That is a great feature for kids who are artists.
There are also three nice mini movies. I watched all of these and they were cute. What is also nice is that there is an explanation of why these mini movies were created. I just love seeing these behind the scenes features because I learn so much more about the movie and the reasons behind the creative decisions.
The movie is a nice addition to your collection and the extra features are fun. I haven’t explored everything yet but what I have seen I was impressed with. I’ve attached the official press release and a video about the movie. DR. SEUSS’ THE LORAX will arrive on Blu-ray™ 3D Combo Pack and Blu-ray™ Combo Pack (both sets featuring DVD, Digital Copy and UltraViolet™) on August 7, 2012 from Universal Studios Home Entertainment.
