My #AvengersEvent Birthday

Photo-A-Day #3653

Today I was lucky enough to travel from home to LA so that I could attend the screening of Avengers: Age of Ultron. My forty-first birthday was many things. It was an amazing trip to see a great movie. It was the end of ten years of me taking a photo every day and the beginning of my eleventh year.

At this point I’m not posting anything about the movie. I have a bunch of posts coming up over the next month. I saw so much, met so many people and had some fantastic experiences that I can’t wait to share with you all.

The photo here was taken at Legends Plaza at Disney Studios. We stopped here briefly before and after the movie.

App Alert: Mickey Mouse Mash-Up

Mickey Mouse Mash Up

We received a download code to check out the app Mickey Mash-Up and review it. Opinions are 100% my own.

I have really been enjoying the new Mickey Mouse cartoons that have come out in the past few months. Now, one of them, “No Service” is part of an app called Mickey Mouse Mash-Up. In the App, users get to help Mickey Mouse in his adventure. You can play by drawing object to help Mickey, move the iPad around to help Mickey also. You can also lend your voice to create sound effects. There are so many ways that players can use the features of the iPad. Continue reading App Alert: Mickey Mouse Mash-Up

All new Mickey Mouse Website and Video App

Mickey Mouse and Friends

I received a fun media alert about Mickey Mouse (see below). As a kid I watched the Disney Channel for the classic Mickey Mouse Cartoons and now as an adult I watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse with the kids. I certainly miss the classic cartoons though. Now I can find a bunch of them plus all new digital shorts starring Mickey and his friends. I watched Croissant de Triomphe and it was very funny and done in a cool style. I like that each of the shorts are set in different places and have lots of visual humor.

Mickey got his start in 1928 with the cartoon short “Steamboat Willie” – and now he’s starring in an all new short-form series of 19 comedy cartoons, titled “Mickey Mouse” which are now live on both Disney.com’s new Mickey & Friends website and Disney’s new Mickey Video app, available for iOS devices on the App Store. The new site and app give fans direct access to the new shorts and additional Mickey Mouse extras on all of their favorite platforms and devices.

After premiering on Disney Channel, each “Mickey Mouse” short streams on the new Mickey & Friends website, which is the digital home of Mickey Mouse and a comprehensive gateway to all Mickey games, videos and content on Disney.com. Upon debut, the shorts will also be immediately available in the new Mickey Video app.

The first four episodes, including “Croissant de Triomphe” set in Paris and “No Service” set in Santa Monica are live now. And to watch upcoming episodes of “Mickey Mouse” shorts:

Star Wars / Free Comic Book Day Crossover

Photo-A-Day #2948

Today was the annual even where Comic Book stores are inundated with fans clamoring for free comic books. Free Comic Book Day is an event that we have participated in for many years now. Each year we head to Wild Time Comics to see Randy and his family and pick up some fun new books. I’ve been taking Eva to Free Comic Book Day since 2010 (I missed 2011 but Allison took her and her cousin, Amanda). Each year we’ve gone to Wild Time for the day and the event has gotten bigger and better each year. There are goodie bags and cookies for the kids. There is a balloon artist and even some comic book artists and writers signing. We get there early because of my sleep schedule so we missed a few things. Maybe some year I’ll have more time to spend at the event.

Randy gets dressed as Thor and it is funny because almost one year to the day we have a photo of Eva with Randy as Thor and it is so funny to see how little she looked a year ago. Also, last year she was Torrun the daughter of Thor and this year she went as Supergirl. Then you jump back to 2010 and she went with a dress and a crown. Her photo even showed up in the Free Comic Book Day thank you ad to the fans. Next Year I think Andrew will be at that level where Eva was for her first Free Comic Book Day. He still needs to be carried and he is all wiggly and impatient. I think next year he’ll come in costume and be able to pick out his own comics. We didn’t pick out any for him because he is at the stage where he will just rip them up. Continue reading Star Wars / Free Comic Book Day Crossover

App Review: Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Mickey’s Wildlife Count Along!

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Mickey’s Wildlife Count Along!

When I was a kid we would play car games. License plate bingo, try and make a big rig honk by pumping your arm up and down, punchbuggy and a parental favorite, the quiet game. My kids have many more options for their road trip entertainment and rather than have them just play games I like them to learn a little something. That is why I love apps on the iPad and iPhone. There are so many apps that are all about learning but disguised as games.

Disney Learning recently released their first math and science app. Kids can drive along with Mickey and his clubhouse friends around the world to many different habitats to find, count and photograph animals. In each habitat Mickey will ask kids to find a certain number of animals and if they pick the right group they can then photograph the animals. You travel through many environments because Mickey and friends are headed to the beach so Mickey can photograph some bottlenose dolphins but he keeps making wrong turns. Review: MICKEY MOUSE CLUBHOUSE: I Heart MINNIE

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: I Heart Minnie DVDToday Eva and I watched a few episodes from the soon to be released Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: I Heart Minnie DVD. This DVD has five Minnie-centric episodes including a never before seen episode called Minnie & Daisy’s Flower Shower. That was the first episode that we decided to watch. This episode focused on Minnie and Daisy preparing for a Flower Show. They had to make the clouds rain so that their flowers could grow. They also made the clouds into shapes. Don’t try to understand why the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse is doing the things they do but focus on what skills they reinforce for children like counting, color and shape recognition and more skills like that. Don’t look to it for problem solving skills though because there is no way Toodles is gonna show up with the right mousekatool in the real world. But I do think that sequencing, shape recognition, counting and those skills are done right for the kids. Continue reading Review: MICKEY MOUSE CLUBHOUSE: I Heart MINNIE

Wisteria in the Ice

Wisteria in the Ice
Photo-A-Day #2128

The ice in the area has been crazy. Our entire Wisteria plant is completely encased in the ice. I saw this first thing this morning and took a few photos but didn’t like how they came out. So, once I got home I set my camera to Snow Mode and tried again. I moved around some more and this time got onto the porch and looked at things from another perspective and I liked what I found. Review: Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Minnie’s Masquerade

Eva Enjoying her new Mickey Mote with Minnie's Masquerade DVD

The other day I received a brand new DVD for Eva and I to review. This was a Disney DVD called Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Minnie’s Masquerade. I was pretty excited to receive this because Eva is such a huge fan of the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. I was also excited because the DVD is one of the ones that comes with a Mickey Mote and add a layer of interactivity for the Eva.

The setup of the Mickey Mote was easy but it only worked on one of our DVD players. As luck would have it the only DVD player that works with the Mickey Mote is the one in the bedroom so Eva got to hang out in the big bed and enjoy playing with the Mickey Mote and watching the show. She took right to the Mickey Mote and I set it at the second level. She can handle being able to identify four colors and shapes so we jumped right in to playing. For some reason Level Two played Secret Spy Daisy and not the new episode Minne’s Maquerade. I would have liked to have been able to choose the show to watch or at least know which episodes were level 1 and level 2.

Eva Enjoying her Minnie Masquerade Mask and her Mickey MoteAlso included in the package was a masquerade mask. The mask was reversible and on one side I Eva could color her own mask. Also included was a DVD cover that Eva could color too. She has already colored in her mask.

I had to leave the room while Eva was watching the show and when I returned she was all excited to tell me that she had answered another question using the Mickey Mote. She was very proud of herself for being able to answer the questions and play by herself. This is a great way for kids to get into their shows as a participant rather than just an observer. This DVD comes out on February 8. Here is the official press release with more information. Continue reading Review: Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Minnie’s Masquerade
