Tonight we had friends over for a pirate pizza party. Why was it pirate themed, you ask? Well, for many reasons. First of all Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides came out on DVD and Blu-Ray and Movie Download on the 18th and I have a review to write on that movie. I was sent pirate costumes to review and I was sent a pirate party pack and 6 copies of the Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides DVD to throw a pirate themed party. So it being near Halloween I figured we do a bunch of these at the same time and have a Pirate Pizza Party with friends.
Our Piratical Spread!
To prepare for the party Allison used Pintrest to find ideas on how to make some ordinary things a little more pumped up and piratical. She created fun labels for the party fixings like “Cannonballs” for Cheese Balls, “Jewels!” for Red and Green Grapes, “Pieces of Eight” for pepperoni for the pizza and even “Fiery Cutlass” for red bell pepper slices.
The signs just made those snacks 20% cooler!

The party was to be for kids and we did do a kids party. The thing is, Pirates of the Caribbean is PG-13 and the oldest kids invited was 6 or 7. So instead of watching the movie the kids watched Disney’s Jake and the Never Land Pirates. Their parents got a copy of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie. We did use the pinata. Eva and I filled that with candy yesterday. We had make your own pizza using Flatout Flatbread and I went out in the morning and bought 4 pumpkins for carving.
This afternoon after cleaning the house and the sidewalks (with Eva’s help) I scooped out the contents of the four pumpkins for pumpkin carving. I filled a container with pumpkin seed which Allison and Eva made into “Pirate Teeth” (roasted and smoked pumpkin seeds). I fully intended for there to be pumpkin carving but that just did not happen. The only carving that was done to the pumpkins was slight nibbled from the squirrels in the yard. We will however do some carving of those pumpkins, maybe tomorrow night as a family activity.
Our friends arrived and we had a make your own pizza station in the kitchen.
We had the kids in the living room watching Jake and our guests mingling around the kitchen, living room and dining room. My parents came over because they wanted to see the family all dressed up in our pirate Halloween Costumes (Eva’s going to be Starsong the My Little Pony for Halloween and so won’t be in her pirate duds that night). Allison and I each had pirate costumes as well. MY dad took a family photo of us.
Before we knew it, it was already time for the kids to take on the Pinata. Having no place to hand the pinata I found my walking stick downstairs and looped the leather strap around the pinata and then held it up while 4-year-olds took swings at it. We didn’t blindfold and spin them around because, let’s face it I was already standing too close and was risking getting hit in the America’s Funniest Home Videos spot. At first the kids took some timid swings but then I took a couple of whacks at it and then my friend Casey took a few as well. When we handed the bat back to the kids they had a new fire in their eyes and they took big time whacks at the pinata.
Okay Kids let me show you a thing or two
Giving it another shot!
Our friend Adrienne helped me take turns holding up the pinata and then also gave Eva a hand swinging at it. Eva started getting the hang of it and had a good time. Eva was swinging with fury!
Candy!
And then the pinata broke and Eva had a really good time. So did the other kids as they filled up a baggie of treats.
When everyone left we gave them the DVD/Blu-Ray, a baggie of candy, a treasure chest, some stick on jewels, some doubloons and an eye-patch. The kids also got to take home some bandannas as well. It wasn’t until much later that we realized that we never got the chance to carve up the pumpkins. I don’t think ours will come out as great as these ones… but they will be close.
We had a really nice night and were so glad that my parents could come and visit, our friends could come and visit and all the kids could have a really fun time. I know that Eva enjoyed being “Izzy” the pirate for a night.
