On October 18th Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was released on DVD, Blu-Ray and Movie Download. This is the fourth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and stars Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow a wily and flamboyant pirate who manages to get himself into and out of tons of trouble. I’ve enjoyed the Pirates movies ever since the very first one came out. That one was by far the best in the series because it was visually stunning, had a great cast and a fun story. With the second movie things went downhill and the third was really hard to follow because of the plot holes. However, with the fourth movie I think that things have gotten back on track. The movie is loosely based on a novel called On Stranger Tides. Captain Jack Sparrow was written into the story and the usual mayhem ensues.
The movie revolves around finding the fountain of youth. We are also introduced to Blackbeard the pirate. Blackbeard has a ship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge and on his ship he has a very special collection of ships in a bottle. One of those ships is Sparrow’s beloved Black Pearl. So Jack is back, so are many of the other pirates you will remember from the previous movies including Geoffrey Rush as Barbosa and new characters played by Penélope Cruz and Ian McShane (the aforementioned BlackBeard) . Along the way Jack encounters and eludes the Queen’s soldiers, Mermaids, that pesky monkey that has been in the other films and a case of mistaken identity.
I enjoyed watching this movie, it was a great escape and definitely a popcorn chomper. Don’t expect to much innovation in the series but expect to be entertained as it was certainly an entertaining romp. It was filled with action, humor and fun. And with a couple more Pirates movies to come sparked new life into the series.
