Such Happiness

Photo-A-Day #3626

This week I brought my Samsung NX1 and the 18-200mm lens with me to swimming lessons. I figured that since I was going to be sitting on the bleachers that I should do something. I watched and took photos, got annoyed, took more photos.

On the ride over to swimming Andrew said that he wanted to swim with me in the water. I explained to him that this class he would swim on his own with the teacher. He said that he didn’t want to swim with the teacher and then he asked about our previous teacher. I knew that once we got to the pool he’d be fine swimming with whoever was there. I couldn’t help but feel a resurgence of annoyance over what I expected the class to be and what the class turned out to be. I’ve gone over that at length in many places including a post on the Cooper & Kid site and a whole episode about it on Dad.fm.

Andrew is a happy kid, he wants to have fun in the pool. The problem is that he tends not to listen to the swimming teacher and he ends up doing his own thing or he’s bored of hanging on the wall while another kid works with the teacher. So he turns around to watch the other kid work with the teacher. When he does this he lets go of the wall with at least one hand. The rule is that the kids have to keep two hands on the wall for safety. Andrew got spoken to a couple of times and then told that if he lets go of the wall again he’s going to have to sit out on the wall. He had to sit out of the water twice. And then the teacher called me out to ask if I talked to Andrew about listening to the teacher. I do, all the time. He’s not good at listening to me, so it stand to reason that he’s not going to be great at listening to the teacher. He’s three, so he’s learning impulse control. Right now, it is not great. He swims well but he’s impulsive and forgets to do what the teacher asks him while he waits around for his next turn. He’s great with the teacher when it is his turn because he’s actually doing something.

Andrew is getting really good at peeling small oranges. He asks for one almost every day and always insists on peeling it himself. I start it off and then he patiently peels it by the sink, tossing each piece into the side with the garbage disposal. He’s very proud when he finishes this task and I’m proud of him, too. IT is a good use of fine motor control.
