Three years ago we took a family trip up to New Hampshire to the Christmas Farm Inn for Thanksgiving. This is a three hour ride. It is a long ride for a couple of little kids but it isn’t too terrible. We had some DVDs to take with us and a car that had a DVD player for the kids. Now, thrown in a blizzard and an extra four hours to the ride plus the kids’ desire to watch the same DVD repeatedly for those extra four hours. You can only imagine how keyed up I was. Luckily that turned out to be one of the best trips ever as a family.
If we were to make the trip again one thing that I would make sure we do is check out all the shows that we could download on our Netflix app. That way we could load up the kids’ devices with some great content that they could watch on the ride. I think we’d be safe putting at least six hours of downloads on each device. That would be enough for many episodes of their favorite shows like Beat bugs, Super Monsters, Trollhunters and Project MC2. It is really easy to do, too. Just fire up the app and choose “Available for Download” then search and download your favorite shows. Definitely make sure that you choose “available for Download” first. This will save you from getting your hopes up that a show is downloadable only to find out that it is not. There are a ton of shows that are available for download but there are also some that are not. Follow my advice to prevent any unwanted frustration. Netflix shows you how road trips can be better in this video which has a re-purposed popular show intro.
As a Netflix #StreamTeam member I often get to view screeners for upcoming shows and movies. I was able to watch the first three episodes of the upcoming Netflix Original dramedy series that launches on August 11th, ‘Atypical’. This series stars Keir Gilchrist as Sam Gardner, Jennifer Jason Leigh as Elsa Gardner, Brigette Lundy-Paine as Casey Gardner and Michael Rapaport as Doug Gardner. The story centers around Sam, an 18-year-old on the autistic spectrum searching for love and independence. While Sam is on his funny and emotional journey of self-discovery, the rest of his family must grapple with change in their own lives while exploring the question: what does it really mean to be “normal”?
For Sam’s mom, Elsa, played by Jennifer Jason Leigh this is a very difficult time. She has spent her life looking after Sam, protecting him from the world and taking care of his every need. Sam’s growing independence is almost a threat to who Elsa is as a person. Her whole identity has been a mother of an autistic boy. along the way she has forgotten her own identity. Sam’s journey and life-changing path is also a life-changing moment for everyone else in the family.
For Doug, Sam’s Dad, played by Michael Rappaport, this new change means the possibility for finally connecting to his son. This is something that Doug has tried to do all of Sam’s life. Doug desperately wants to find some common ground with Sam. I immediately identified with Doug. When Andrew was born things were clicking along like clockwork. Eva was out of diapers and was becoming more independent and easy to do more exciting things with. Then along comes Andrew. He will not sleep, he has a food allergy and he screams and cries constantly. At the same time I had taken a night job and my sleep rhythm was all out of whack. Andrew and I butted heads for most of his first few years. I worried about ever being able to connect with him and immediately saw that in Doug. Luckily , for me, I have been bonding really well with Andrew these past few years.
Rounding out the cast is Sam’s younger sister, Cassie, played by Brigette Lundy-Paine. Cassie is tough, focused and athletic. She and Doug have their bond. However, Sam’s actions also set things in motion for changes in Cassie’s life as well.
I watched the first three episodes of this 8 1/2 hour episode series. I really wanted more when my screeners were over. It is interesting to see how Sam interacts with the world around him and how his family dynamic works. I can’t say much more about the show without any spoilers to plot points but it was something I enjoyed and I think that more people will also enjoy it.
With eight, half-hour episodes filmed in Los Angeles, Atypical was created and written by Robia Rashid and Academy-Award winning producer Seth Gordon. Together, Rashid and Gordon serve as executive producers alongside Mary Rohlich, with Jennifer Jason Leigh as producer. Michelle Dean, who received her PhD from UCLA and worked at the UCLA Center for Autism and Research and Treatment before joining the faculty of CSU Channel Island, was also brought into the production to help guide an accurate depiction of autism spectrum disorder. The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television for Netflix.
When Puss in Book was released on June 20th we tried it out as a family. We did the show two ways. First we watched it all the way through on Netflix but not on a computer, on our TV. This way we were unable to make any choices to the story. It went along the existing track. The story was entertaining but we wanted more. We wanted to have control of the story.
So, the second time around we watched the show on the Netflix app on the iPad. We had a fun time interacting with the story. The kids loved it so much that they went and started watching the Puss in Boots series, something that they had not previously shown much interest in watching. They love the Shrek movies but that did not make them jump over to this series. I’d love to see more of these interactive type programs. The official description of this program and trailer is below.
Our Netflix StreamTeam contacts sent us the fun “Anne with an E” care package. It came complete with some Kindred Spirits buttons for Eva to share with her best fried as well as tissues for those episodes that will make you cry and also a copy of Anne of Green Gables plus a notebook to write all of Eva’s imaginary stories.
Eva and Andrew and Allison watched the 90 minute first episode. Allison liked it very much. I think that she read the book as a child. I never read the book myself, but I’ve heard many good things about it. Eva was more interested in getting into reading the book then watching the show. She is much more interested in books these days, which is great. I think that after she reads the book she’s going to want to watch the series. I think that I should read the book as well.
On April 5th Netflix announced that they are doing away with the stars rating system in favor of a thumbs system. This is a really easy system and will make it easier for Netflix to recommend shows that you may enjoy. By rating your shows you become a curator of the best content for yourself. The new thumbs rating system gives you another way to personalize your entertainment experience.
Eva helped me with this review by playing with the toy and telling me about it on the video below. We loved the movie Moana when we saw it as a family. There were so many great parts to it including the information about wayfinding. Wayfinding is the special way in which people from the Pacific Islands navigated the oceans. The canoe that Moana has in the movie and the other ones that she discoveres are very close to the look of a special canoe that is making its way around the world, the Hokulea. This double hulled canoe is being sailed by a group of peopel who have been learning the art of wayfinding before it is lost forever. It is so cool that a kids movie touches upon something that is so close to the heart of the Pacific Islands.
This is a pretty nice playset. The doll is an excellent one and looks great compared to her movie counterpart. The figures of Pua and Hei Hei are also done really well. Pua is the best of the bunch, he looks just like the character. The canoe is okay but the “gentle rocking motion” is not exactly that gentle. It rocks from side to side with a lot of extra motion. So much so that pua and Hei Hei fall off when you move it. Eva will talk more about it in the video.
Also, below the video is a clip from the movie Moana.
Of all the songs from Moana I am most impressed by the song “We Know The Way”. It is a beautiful song and I have the full clip of it below. The song is written and performed by Opetaia Foa’i and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
The MOANA original motion picture soundtrack, the two-disc deluxe edition and the digital deluxe edition soundtrack are available wherever music is sold and streamed. More about Moana below.
One of my favorite songs in Moana is “You’re Welcome”. Andrew and I sing this song over and over. He also maybe made me play the clip below about 10 times straight. He doesn’t like when I sing the song, though. So I can sing it to bug him when he’s bugging me. “You’re Welcome!”
MOANA stars Dwayne Johnson (voice of “Maui”), newcomer Auli’i Cravalho (voice of “Moana”) was directed by Disney legends Ron Clements & Don Hall (“Aladdin,” “The Little Mermaid,” “The Princess and the Frog,” etc.) with music by Lin-Manuel Miranda (of “Hamilton” fame). But there is another main character in MOANA that was sometimes difficult to work with…
On Monday the whole family was treated to an advanced screening of Disney’s Moana. This is a beautiful film that was both funny and amazing. The music was some of the best I have heard in a long while. We ended up listening to the Moana Spotify station non-stop since we saw the movie. Songs have been stuck in our heads and smiles on our faces remembering that movie.
Moana as a character is fantastic. She is strong, determined and is searching for her place in the world. She is drawn to the ocean against the wishes of her father. Despite her love for her family she disobeys her father and journeys the open ocean. It is her strong love for her family and her connection to her people that she does this. She is on a journey of self discovery and it will take all of her courage and determination to succeed.
A major part of the movie was about wayfinding. Wayfinding is Polynesian navigation that has been used for thousands of years to make long voyages across thousands of miles of open ocean. I learned about this during the Summer when I visited the Hokulea when it sailed into Woods Hole. The ships in Moana look very much like the Hokulea. Seeing Moana learn how to to sail was inspiring.
The movie was also very funny. We loved Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Maui. He had some great lines in the movie. From the trailer you see him jump into a deep hole and a few minutes later yells “I’m Still Falling!” On our way home from the movie we said that it looked like Andrew was falling asleep. His eyes were closed and he looked asleep, but he pops open one eye and says, “I’m still falling.” Even funnier after having seen the movie.
The water was a character in the movie, too. You can see some more funny moments with water in the featurette below.
Behind The Scenes of MOANA – “Working With Water”:
As a member of the Netflix #StreamTeam I sometimes get early access to shows and I was super excited to get access to the new Skylanders Academy show that is coming on October 28th. I was able to get a screener of the pilot episode and I really liked it. The show has the humor and fun of the video game and it has been a long time coming to get Skylanders into an animated format. The animation is excellent. You can check out the trailer today and the full season on Friday.
The first episode was really well done. The show centers around three main Skylanders: Stealth Elf, Eruptor and of course Spyro. They are about to graduate from Skylanders Academy. While Stealth Elf and Eruptor are ready to graduate, a cocky Spyro thinks that he is ready but he certainly has a lot to learn about being part of a team.
Spyro is played by Justin Long and not Josh Keaton who has been Spyro in all the Skylanders video games. It is probably my biggest pet peeve of the show even though Justin does a decent job as Spyro. Spyro is really, really cocky and he ends up failing to become a Skylander during the Skylander Games. So, he has to do some deep soul searching and help when the time is needed.
Stealth Elf is played by Ashley Tisdale to great comic effect. She is the voice of reason and sensibility on the team. She motivates Spyro to be the hero that we all know he will become.
Eruptor is played by Jonathan Banks, a character actor and voice actor that you have probably seen or heard many times before. I recall him from Community. Eruptor can be counted on for some comic relief in his somewhat clueless questions.
Kaos is of course voiced by Richard Steven Horvitz because, let’s face it, NO ONE else could ever get that voice right. You cannot replace the voice of Kaos, he’s one of the biggest parts of Skylanders and has been in every iteration of the game. Kaos has all sorts of schemes as, we’d expect and it is up to the Skylanders to stop him. Actually, in the first episode it is up to Spyro himself to stop Kaos.
Rounding out the cast we have Norm MacDonald as Glumshanks and although he isn’t the original Glumshanks voice from the games he does a really great job as the character. He’s funny and glib and basically does his usual Norm MacDonald thing and it works well for Glumshanks.
The show is filled with fun action and lots of jokes. You also see tons of Skylanders around the academy and they may or may not have much to do or say but occasionally they will get a good line or two for comedic effect. I’m definitely excited to see the whole season when it comes to Netflix on Friday. Continue reading Skylanders Academy Season 1 on Netflix Arrives Friday #StreamTeam→
