Transformers: The Last Knight Blu-ray/Digital Review

Transformers 5
Photo-A-Day #4554

I received a download code for the digital release of Transformers: The Last Knight for free from Paramount. These are my honest opinions. When Transformers: The Last Knight came out I was one of the first to see it in the theaters. It was an absolute spectacle from beginning to end. It was completely action packed from beginning to end. This movie retcons the entire Transformers mythos including previous movies. The Transformers have been on Earth for many years and we start on the time of King Arthur where Merlin the magician gets a staff from a Transformers knight that sounds an awful lot like Megatron. Stanley Tucci does a fantastic job as Merlin, a fraud, a drunk and a bit crazy. The magic staff can control a dragon combiner that comes to the rescue of King Arthur and his knights.

I watched some of the behind the scenes extras for this movie and there was a Transformers writers room where 14 different writers came up with 14 different stories. There was a story of Transformers in the time of King Arthur. Another story talked about a coming of age story in World War II. It feels like every story has been mashed together into this 2 and 1/2 hour trailer for multiple movies. Many thing that happened in the past movies are glossed over and it appears that in the time since Transformers 4 many things have changed.

Transformers have become illegal all over the world except Cuba. All sorts of Transformers are crash landing on Earth all the time. Cade Yeager and the team from the last movie, the ones who saved everyone, are now hiding in a junkyard and are pursued like criminals. They rescue other Transformers when contact is made. There is a group called the TRF that hunts down the Transformers and they operate outside the military. Josh Duhamel returns as Colonel William Lennox who has infiltrated this group or is working with this group.

Cade receives a talisman from an ancient Transformer. How or why this Transformer has the talisman makes no sense and is not explained. Then we have characters like Barricade and Megatron back in the mix. I’m pretty sure that Optimus killed Barricade in the very first movie. I’m not sure if Megatron came back in the 4th movie or not but this is another thing that doesn’t seem to make much sense.

Then you have Optimus Prime. He has returned to Cybertron, although it seems like he was pulled there and didn’t actually get their under his own power. There he has a meeting with Quintessa the Prime of life. (huh?) Optimus tries to attack Quinetessa but she is way more powerful than he is. She slaps some sort of robot voodoo on Prime and he becomes evil. So, he comes back to Earth and tries to gain a staff that has the power to destroy Earth, I guess.

There are so many storylines to follow here and most of the robots get underutilized. Some new ones are introduced and thrown away almost immediately. The characters from Transformers 4 like Crosshairs, Hound and Drift are underutilized. They basically just hide in the junkyard with Cade. They also have Grimlock and some baby dinobots in the junkyard, too. Where are these guys from? Where are the rest of the dinobots? They disappeared at the end of the last movie. Grimlock is pretty much there for comic relief in that he eats a police cruiser and then doesn’t do much else.

There are some moments in the movie that are cool but then something shiny comes through and some words get said, then something nonsensical happens. I guess if you suspend all disbelief and dive into a large container of popcorn while enjoying tons of explosions and cool looking cars plus a Michael Bay love letter to the military then this is a movie for you. There is such attention to detail for so many parts of the movie except for the plot and story.

All this in the first 30 minutes of this two and a half hour movie. Watching the entire movie is exhausting but there are some amazing things to see.

If any one of those fourteen stories were fully developed they would be a pretty amazing movie. However, mashing them all together makes for an assault on both senses and your common sense. You just can’t try and figure it all out. So, turn off your brain, and strap in for a fun ride.

Thoughts on Transformers 5: The Last Knight

Today I was invited into Boston to view Transformers: The Last Knight. This is the fifth Transformers movie from Bay and company. I took along my pal Brian from Built from Bricks so he could see a sneak preview, too. I had some thoughts on the movie that night but below the video I will have written some more.

Did You Know That I Have Other Channels?

Clay Dragons
Photo-A-Day #4309

The kids were busy today. They were crafty, too. Eva has some modeling clay and she made a couple of dragons. She made one for herself, the one in the egg and one for Andrew. The image doesn’t do justice to how intricate she actually made the little dragon. Then she made one for Andrew and he painted it. I have a couple of crafty kids.

During a single week I film and produce up to 17 videos across 4 channels. Two I own, one I am a partner on and the other I am a guest host and the film crew. It is buys but I love doing it. My personal channels are this one and Big Damn Kid (link below). I am a co-host of the weekly show, SteamDads and I often do episodes of Built From Bricks with my buddy Brian. I’ve been doing this even more with him and we’re going to go to Philly BrickFest Live together in April.

Transformers: Forged to Fight is the Mobile Game I’ve Been Waiting For

Watching the trailer for Transformers: Forged to Fight made makes me incredibly excited for Spring 2017. The gameplay images look great and a good fighting/RPG game featuring the Transformers is something that I wish was around when I was a kid. Waking up on Christmas morning and opening all my Transformers and orchestrating giant fight scenes was one of my greatest childhood memories. The fights in my imagination look to be coming to life in this new game. Just look at this image of G1 Optimus Prime fighting Transformers Movie Megatron.

This game is going to be amazing. I can’t wait to play it.

DVD Review: Transformers Energon: The Complete Series

Transformers Energon The Complete Series Growing up as a Transformers fan I made sure to watch everything and anything that came along. I watched all of Transformers Armada (part one of the Unicron Trilogy of shows) and then went right into Transformers Energon. I collected the toys and have most of them still in the boxes. I have a ton of them because I still had a little discretionary income to use on toys. I liked the concept of the Powerlinking that the characters did. Being able to combine characters with each other and thus mix and match up the team was an interesting concept.

The show itself was okay. There was a blending of CGI and traditional cel animation which gave the show a unique look. I know I enjoyed watching the show because it was Transformers. I am also sure that I liked Transformers Cybertron more and then got really excited when Transformers Animated and Transformers Prime came along. This series is part of the overall Transformers history and helped get us to where the Transformers franchise is today. Here are some clips from the show and a Press Release about the May 6th release of the DVD collected series. Continue reading DVD Review: Transformers Energon: The Complete Series

Transformers Prime Predacons Rising Available on Digital

Transformers Prime Beast Hunters Predacons Rising on Blu-ray and DVD

To tide me over until the release of the new Transformers cartoon on the HUB in 2015 I can re-watch Transformers Prime including the movie Predacons Rising. Predacons Rising looks like it will be the jumping off point for the new cartoon. Although I have the movie on Blu-ray it can be purchased digitally as well. Then I can watch it everywhere. DVD Review: Transformers Armada The Complete Series

Transformers Armada Complete Series

We received a copy of Transformers Armada the Complete Series to watch and review. Here are our thoughts.

I’ve watched all of the Transformers series that have come out in the US. Prior to watching Transformers Armada I watched Transformers Robots in Disguise. Transformers Armada was a whole new kind of show where the story introduced mini-cons to the lineup as a new faction of Cybertronians. The mini-cons could work with the larger bots and power them up or serve as weapons. I remember buying a lot of those toys. Each group of mini-cons would do different things. The most important ones were the ones that turned into the Star Sabre. The mini-cons just wanted to be left alone and not used as pawns in the Autobot vs Decepticon war. They fled Cybertron and crashed on Earth where they lay dormant until some kids found and reawakened them. Unfortunately this reawakening brings the Autobots and Decepticons and their war to Earth.

It was a pretty good series overall and I glad that it has been collected into this 8 DVD set. If you are a fan of the series consider picking it up. You can pre-order Transformers Armada: The Complete Series at Amazon.com. Continue reading DVD Review: Transformers Armada The Complete Series

Custom Kreon Megatron

Photo-A-Day #3255

The other day I wrote about my custom Kreons that I picked up. Yesterday’s Photo was of Optimus Prime. Today I decided to shoot the Megatron figure. The pieces for the Megatron figure are okay but they really should have a black fusion cannon instead of a silver one and a grey helmet instead of the translucent helmet and the silver helmet. Both figures are missing some very specific pieces. There should be an orange energon ax for Optimus Prime and there should be a purple energon mace for Megatron. That would have made the set much better overall, plus the other things I said about the Optimus Prime Custom Kreon.

KRE-O Custom Optimus Prime

Photo-A-Day #3254

I picked up a couple of the KRE-O Custom figures at Toys R Us the other day. These sets have about 36 or so pieces to create custom Kreons. I grabbed Optimus Prime and Megatron. For the most part these sets are nice and there is the figure and also a piece that holds all the extra pieces except it doesn’t fit everything very well. They should include a second head so that the spare helmet sits on the torso properly. Other than that they are pretty decent with good looking figures. Having a G1 Optimus and G1 Megatron figure is nice.
