It is 1996 and I am graduating from college. I haven’t watched a Transformers cartoon series since Generation 1 and along comes this whole new series set in Cybertron’s future where there are still two warring factions the heroic Maximals and evil Predacons. The two groups crash land on an Earth-like planet and for 52 episodes we are treated to some of the best Transformers storytelling to come along, out side of the comics which were always pretty great. This series sparked a bit of a Transformers rebirth and when the credits fell on the last episode fans wanted more.
They got more… in the form of the 26 episode series Beast Machines. Beast Machines told the story of the return to Cybertron after the Maximals were stranded on Earth. Yes, the planet was actually Earth and not earth of the future but Earth of the far flung past slightly later than when the Autobots and Decepticons crash landed upon it. The Maximals return to Cybertron with a captured Megatron but the triumph turns tragic when the team gets separated, their memories are lost and Decepticon vehicons are hunting them down all over the planet. What’s worse is that they cannot transform.
Outnumbered by a much wider margin than on Earth the Maximals hide deep within Cybertron and find the organic core of the planet. What happens next in the remainder of the series was pretty amazing and I really enjoyed it. I was so happy to get an advanced copy of this DVD before today’s release date. It came out of the blue and I hadn’t asked for it so I am even more thrilled. The only series I still have to collect would be the complete series of Transformers: Cybertron, Transformers: Robots in Disguise and Seasons 2 & 3 of Transformers Beast Wars (the predecessor to Beast Machines)
The Beast Machines DVD also has some bonus features including interviews with series developer Marv Wolfman, story editor Robert N. Skir, voice director Susan Blue and voice actor David Kaye.
